i think its been 3 years since I last folded for you guys, funny thing is some comp I borged back then has kept my stats goin :D. Anything new I should get acquainted with, anything big changed? I noticed statsman is gone :(. I saw the new stats page, what do the colors indicate? I'm military now and have an "unlimited" source of energy, (barracks). I've considered farming but I will want the smallest possible configs. anyone know the best price for perfomance rig out there nowadays? its good to be back.

 
a few things I'm thinking about. I remember back then it was possible to splice power supplies to power 2 motherboards. are dual cpus still more efficient? I remember the idea of using flash drives to fold was even considered. again any input would be appreciated. thx :)

i took a look at the price comparison chart but I guess what I'm trying to say is that I need my rigs to be as incognito as possible. I'm talking about hording boxen in my barracks room, something I'm not sure would be easily approved of :p great info on there though!
 
another question, I'm real lazy and don't want to paste the folding stats every time I make a post, is there an automated way of doing this?

find your stats on Hardfolding, on the bottom of your stat page, there is a little howto.... I have mine set up to be a bookmark in Netscape.... I just click it, and it puts the badge code in and sends the message...

Mage's Foldserver and/or Foldix would be great for diskless operation (you would have to have one master PC with a HD... ) and the developer is an active member here... there should be a link in the FAQ/etc sticky....

As for recommended hardware, I think almost every board made now has an onboard NIC that'll work...

hmmm...I have this unused cabinet type thing, I'm already thinking about overheating problems if I had to keep it closed? :confused:
 
There could also be power issues. Running that many machines off the same power connection could become problematic.

I think the general consensus right now is that dual core machines are the way to go. Intel and AMD have really low voltage chips coming out that look very promising. They'd keep both the heat and noise ratio down.
 
I don't think foldix is diskless, fold server would be what you want.

Also, check out the latest mage brain fart- turning a Linksys router into a fold server. Not sure what the status is, I think we released it (posted a link) and said good luck to all.... :)

Drill out the foot locker, install a few fans and your good to go.
 
Yeah, as far as performance/watt/$/space goes, Fold-server running on a bunch of dual-cores is your best bet. On stripped-down machines (just a MB/CPU/RAM), you can probably still use one PSU for two boards. Just make sure it's hefty enough to handle the load.

thanks for all the responses, i got newegg open ready to order, but I'm still really curious about production per mhz, I have yet to see any real good stats on this kind of information. it seems most people recommend the dual core option because we can squeeze more out of hardware limitations.
 
ah the website is great, but there isn't enough data to go by those numbers just yet.
 
The issue is that on some proteins AMDs are faster, on some proteins Intel is faster. The best configuration would be half AMD and half Intel. IF QMDs come back with their high point bonus then Intels would be great because Intels folded those really fast, but there are other proteins that AMDs do now really well.

The points ppd per wu are tried to be kept constant by Stanford, but in reality things are not always perfect. They bench on an Intel rig with the SSE optimization off. So those SSE optimizations can really help boost speed (AMD and Intel have SSE, but with F@H only utilizes SSE2(3?) with QMDs on Intel chips).

The best idea is to try and get the most mhz you can. The 900 series Intels are good. And the 165 opterons. Find the best overclocker and go to town.

If we knew what your budget is, and how many machines, or even what ppd or wu/day you want then we'd have a better foundation to make suggestions with.
 
hmm that's some good stuff to know. I'm hoping to slowly ramp as I do this. Army monthly pay isn't that great at all. basically I'm hoping to spend 200 max a month on a new rig. I really want to do Fold-server because it just seems to make the most sense. I am hoping to stack motherboards for this setup. I am shying away from jumping into those high end cpus mainly because it will require a big initial investment. I want to start off with 2 systems, one with the Fold-server setup and one dedicated to make sure I get it right. When looking at the cpu to performance ratio and then referenced with the cost to get it set up, it seems that 2 lower end, I'm talking about 3200+ systems produce more and costs less to setup, I've already mentioned that the cost of electricity won't be a problem since I'm in barracks and live here free. taking all that into account, I also just feel that having "more" rigs is just fun, setting them up. tinkering with them etc. I'm very open minded though and am all ears to what you guys have to offer.
 
You might want to consider 3800s instead of 3200s anyways - spend an extra $120ish ($172 versus $293 on ZZF) on a processor and get double the production out of that machine. That's a pretty good deal any way you look at it.

I'm the developer and maintainer (after reading that, marty :rolleyes: ) of fold-server. I'll be glad to help you figure out how to get it going and keep it there. First thing to check out would be the ugly documentation that I wrote, and see if you can make heads or tails of it.

If "easy as pie" is more your speed, Foldix is probably it. Read the thread for more info, and it should be easy to get that going.

 
Dude can you wait a couple weeks? When the new intel chips come out they could/probly will wipe the floor for folding even at the low end. Plus, both AMD and Intel are slashing prices to about HALF of what they are now for all the last gen cpu's. And by last gen for AMD, I really mean almost ALL their cpus.

holy crap, these cuts make getting the AMD 64 X2 chips within pricerange...that is a real long wait though :(

Man I would, you can get almost double the folding power after the conroe launch as you can now for your money. Heck, you might even drop some dough on a low end conroe and make us all jealous of the PPD increase.
 
Outpost.com occasionally runs specials on CPU/MB combos. They've had a Sempron 3100 with motherboard for $70 at my local Fry's, and they've had the same thing for $80 at oupost in the past.

It's not as efficient for space or power, but for the price of one x2 3800, you can get four combos!
 
If you really want to run 2 pc's off of one PSU it can be done. Usually though it isn't a wonderful idea.....especially if you are going to be using higher end chips. Just IMO for what it is worth.
 
Wait for the price drop and save your $.

If you just can't stand it, I'd get an Intel 930 and the $55 Asus board that uses the Intel the chipset. Add some RAM and you have a nice dual core for about $260. I OC'ed that setup to 3.6GHz very easily (change one bios setting).

Then screw around with that box for a few months while the dust settles. :)
 
I've already started to acuire lower end amd systems to play around with, hope they come in the mail quick, :p
