Ok since the early 90's Ive been switching back and forth between ATI and nVidia..first had the TNT Riva, then the Rage128, then went to a GF2 mx400, had that for a long time, then the Ti4200, wnw now onto my current card, 9800pro. Ive had about 4 or so monitors duing this entire span and every single windows setup ive ever had..from the old pentium 60 to my current rig..ATI is the ONLY card that I've found to actually TURN OFF your monitor when you set it to in windows, not put it into a sleeping/hibernating mode like nvidia does..Now every monitor ive used with my nvidia cards last about half as long because they are not fully shut off completely. How do I know this? because i watch the monitor led..on any nvidia card ive ever had in "shutoff" mode the green light turns orange indicating its off..but 10 hours later, i go and move my mouse and my monitor instantly comes back on..Now..with EVERY ati card ive ever had my monitor led turns orange..then BLINKS constantly..now 10 hours later i move my mouse and it slowly actually turns back on rather then waking from a hibernating state. Does anyone else notice this? Ive had to throw away a couple newer monitors because they were basically ON 24/7 never turned off due to nvidia cards..now keep in mind this isnt 1 rig setup with multiple video cards..this is years worth of video cards along with many different rigs and every single time the nvidia card does not FULLY shut off the monitor.
 
Uh, I don't think it's a driver issue per-say.

The monitor power on/off is controlled via the display properties pannel.

Go to the display porperties pannel, then go to screen saver. Under monitor power, click power and adjust the power off timer.

I might be wrong, but I would think that the screen saver is controlled via windows independent of the driver and thus would be able to shut off the monitor.

Edit: After re-reading your post, it appears you did that. But, i'm a little confused, so, I'm posting this anyways.
 
Ive taken pcs with nvidia cards where the monitor doesnt turn off, put a ati card in it, then watch the monitor turn off completely..not changing any settings, except for completely removing the nvidia drivers. same pc..different card, same monitor..ive done this for many years on many different pcs, and not once have i seen an nvidia card turn off my monitor completely. Im not talking about having the screen go blank and the green light turn to a solid orange, im talking about the monitor being shut off where the orange light blinks..nvidia seem to put the monitor in a hibernating state where if you move your mouse the screen appears instantly..

Example: tell your monitor to turn off after 1 minute, let it sit there for about an hour idle, watch your green light turn from green to orange signifiying its "off". After that hour come back and move your mouse and watch your monitor's screen/desktop instantly appear..

now..take out your nvidia card, put in an ati card, same settings turn "off" after 1 minute, let it idle for an hour, watch your green led turn orange but BLINK(SAME MONITOR), then after an hour come back, move your mouse and watch your monitor slowly fade in..signifying your monitor WAS ACTUALLY OFF! rather than in a hibernating state..

so your orange led on your monitor starts blinking? or does it stay solid..if it stays solid then your monitor is not truely off, its in a hibernated state in which case if you come back after like an hour and move your mouse the screen appears instantly.
 
I hate to poke a hole in this theory, but I have a computer with a GeForce2 GTS attached to a 19 inch CRT and it turns off compleatly...orange blinky light and the long ass start up time.

But when I do move the mouse to turn it on it doesn't make that "Broooooong" noise it normally would if I press the button after its been off all night.
 
it stays orange threw the night, and it takes a few seconds for the screen to warm up in the morning
 
I think the person is referring to the differnt methods of turning off a monitor, The only place you'll find these options (that I know of) is in the bios, There are differnt types like (I'm not sure as my gaming rig is down and I'm on a laptop):


DPMS off
Vblank
Black screen
Negitive something someting.

I have expericned that some cards will not do as this setting tells and some do I'm not sure if its a OEM thing or not, it also depends on the monitor too as far as I can tell.
 
well in every pc i have ever setup i have never had my bios control my spindown time for my hd or my monitor being turned off, i always used windows..but i have noticed that with nvidia cards (the ones ive had) they never FULLY shut the monitor off..and my monitor tube has gone bad on a couple monitors because of this..
 
The bios is the only place I've seen where you can specify what it does to turn off the monitor.
 
Yes, the settings for the 4 different power-modes for the monitor should be controlled by the motherboard BIOS (blank only/v+hsynch/DPMS/ cant remember the last one lol etc...)

The reason it may be different is if you have not installed monitor drivers properly, in which case the videocard does not know what the monitor is capable of. There are some early videocards that don't do all power-states either.

Noone should be using Hibernate IMO.. It almost never works properly, even with most laptops, which might explain why its always disabled by default. At most, you will want to use Standby.
 
I just turn my monitor off manually anyways...I myself do it as a habbit...
 
Never noticed because like the gentleman above the on/off button is right in front of me so I never use windows/bios for that.

Just out of curiosity, why exactly did you have to throw away your monitors? I have a Sony monitor that i'm using right now, and it was manufactured in 1996. It spent its first 4 years of life in a corporate "always-on" environment, and the rest of its life on my desk using nvidia cards (riva 128, TNT, TNT2 m64, geforce 256, geforce2MX, geforce3 ti200, geforce 5900XT). It's still going strong. I've got another Dell monitor (OEM Sony) that's been going since 1997, also using nvidia cards. My Sony starts up quickly when you move the mouse, like you say yours do. But my Dell goes into a powered off state, and has a long warm-up time. On the same videocard.

Also, the Riva TNT wasn't released until 1998 or 1999. That's hardly the "early 90's"
 
maybe im a newb or something but isnt there a power button on these monitors? its not difficult at all to push the power button to the off mode. is it just me or is this world getting lazier and lazier by the day?
