someone please help me figure this out i have just installed win xp and i am encountering a number of problems first of all the computer keeps locking up up numerous application installations and now all of a sudden it doesnt recognize my cd rom. I just downloaded directx and it cant find it. I cannot figure this out i have the newest versions of mcafee antivirus and it cant detect anything and occasionally i keep getting an error msg saying that such and such file is a bad image file. what the hell keeps happening should i buy a new copy of windows or what i have formatted and reinstall windows 4 times since last night nothing seems to work

I wouldn't buy a new WinXP, that isn't the problem. It sounds like your RAM or something. Try putting the RAM in different slots, or try ram from another computer. It could also be your motherboard.

Or, it might not be either of those things.

Could we get some specs?

ok my specs are:
mushkin ram 1 gig
gigabyte k8ns pro mb neforce 3
amd 64 3200
wb sata hd 60 gig

this a brand new computer, and everything was working properly a few days ago then i started having problems with a game locking up and it just spiraled from there so upon reformating i have not been able to get anything working properly

Well in order for the game to lock up, it was probably either your video card or RAM. Do you have an extra stick of ram laying around? If you do, try it.

or you could just run memtest right now.
