Help with RAM latencys

Ok, so i decided to leave my CPU running at 2.8Ghz so that my RAM wasn't so heavily overclocked. My question though is since i have kept it at a low clock speed, can i change my latencys at all?

Right now my RAM is at 3-3-3-8 or 3-3-3-7 i cant rell which and i want to make it maybe like 2-2-2-6 or something, but i have no idea what half of the settings in my BIOS do for this sort of thing.

The thing i have found that i think are what im look for are:
Trwt
Twtr
Trrd
Tcl
Trcd
Tras
Trp
and then the CAS and RAS thing.

Can anyone either explain what im trying to change here, or lead me to an article on how to do this? Thanks.

Also, does anyone know what the max Vcore should be on an opteron? or any A64 system for that matter? Im trying to figure out if i can keep my system at 3.0Ghz or not at 1.6V safely.

Thanks a lot.

I see that your ram in your sig is Corsair XMS. But what type of XMS ? XMS Pro? XMS Expert ? And is it a 1 gb stick or 2x512mb or 4x256mb ? And as far as your ram speed. Run it at 200mhz ( 400mhz effective ) and set your cpu interface/ram divider till your ram is running at 200mhz but your cpu is running at 2800mhz or 3000mhz.

if you looked at his sig.. ;)

AMD Opteron 148 @ 3.0Ghz
1GB Corsair XMS DDR400 3-3-3-8
Evga Nvidia 7600GT @ 612/1644
DFI Lanparty NF4

3-3-3-8 or 2.5-3-3-7 is listed in cas - trcd - trp - tras order.

look at my sig. let me know if you have questions :D

Ok, my RAM is running at 233.8Mhz and i know that the latency is listed in the order you mentioned, but whenever i try to change any of those, My computer wont boot, and i have to remove all power from my system by cutting off the PSU and then turning it on, it gets weird.

Also, i can find everything in my BIOS except the CAS latency setting, what might that be called in the BIOS? I have noticed that my BIOS labels things kinda weird.

u should be posting in memory thread?
anyways, (cf)eclipse is the master guru when it comes to memory. it'd be good to PM him.

cas latency should be just that, cas latency.. near the very top of the list ;)

also.. if you can't lower the timings, most likely it's simply because the ram can't do it and remain stable enough to boot. can you lower them at 200mhz?

mind listing everything you have set in the bios for the memory, in order? :D

o yea.

I was able to get it to 2-3-2-something

im not sure which is the number for the last one, if it goes in the order of Tcl-Trcd-Trp-Tras then its 2 otherwise its the other one which is 7, but i cant make that number go any lower, my mobo doesnt let me.

However, i have to change my ratios to 5/6 to keep the RAM at 200mhz exactly and it will get those timings, however, i cant get that 3 to go to 2 regardless of what i do. I've tried everything from upping the DRAM voltage to lowering the the ratio even further, but it still wont budge.

Should i raise the Tras or lower it also? Im really confused about all this stuff. I would love to actually understand this stuff. I read all the stuff in eclipse's sig, but im still somewhat lost as to what is better and how to tell whats better or worse to do.

::EDIT::

right now my timings are either 3-3-3-8 or 3-3-3-3 depending on what is supposed to be where in that order. And its running at the 9/10 ratio so its 23xmhz.

use memest. if there is any question about what timings you're using, it'll tell you :D

for tras.. it doesn't really matter actually. some people like 10, others like 5, some like 0. it really doesn't effect performance. strangely, i've found that 0 provides the best stability for my rig, but i think that has something to do with my memory controller, and it may not apply to you :p

You can get away with 2-2-2-10
(10 tRAS works well for AMD.. At least while overclocking)

Ill try running it at 10 like you say and see if i can get the 3 that i told you i couldn't get to a 2 to go to a 2. Right now the Tras is at 3 so ill see if changing it to 10 changes anything stability wise, ill try playing with it though.
