I want to build a case out of plexiglass. I have a few questions...

1.) How much would I be looking at for a piece of plexi (36"x36)?

2.) How would I join the six sides all together? Something on the corners? (I don't want to melt them together)

3.) How thick should the plexi be?

thank you!

Be creative when connecting them. Maybe using stainless steal l-brackets or something, maybe like a Lamborgini latch or something.

If I used 1/8" plexi, would I need to construct some kind of framing for it? (nothing will be on top)

in my opinion, it's always a good idea to have some sort of framing.

but yes, for plexi that thin, a frame is a must.

you can buy plexi for relatively cheap, i'd pick up a sheet or two so you can actually handle it, and decide for yourself how you should go about it.

That's the beauty of a handbuilt plexi case, the material allows you to have what many Li Li owners call there cases "a blank canvas". you can go in so many different directions with it.

but i'm getting side tracked.

1. Depends on thickness, probably about $20-30... Check out Tapplastics.com (They may actually ahve a store location near you, check their store locator, they're all over the place)!
Tap is a great place, and you can get a price quote, and check out their scrap bin. They charge by the pound in the scrap bin.
2. You can join them by the corners (internally, you could use a plexi block and screw through the corners INTO the block) or you can clip them together. There are also plastic hinges (again, tapplastics.com) and other joiners. Check out tap for more ideas

3. 1/8" is probably a little too flimsy, I'd go with 1/4" if at all possible. Home depot stocks some by the mm, so it's not exactly 1/4" but close. Home depot should also cut them down to size, too. If you make a 1'x1' cube, i guarantee it'll be "bigger than you expected." I made one myself a little while ago, and havne't gotten around to finishing it. Good luck!
