Hey guys, can someone look over a product for me and answer a quick question?
http://www.chyangfun.com/pt_box_d.asp?MID=5&SID=RAID&PNo=CFI-B4044U

It lists two operational modes: JBOD (standard) and Span (combined). Now in my limited understanding of RAID, I thought JBOD was spanning. So can someone point out what this spec actually means? What is the likely difference between these JBOD and Span modes?

It would be awesome if someone's actually had experience with this product and could let me know what they think. I'm not too keen on any sort of RAID because of the risks associated with the non-fault-tolerant levels. Really I'm just looking to hook up four external drives to a machine via USB 2.0 with the convenience of having them all in one case (and with a single power supply). But this doesn't seem like such a bad compromise.

Hi,

In JBOD mode, the OS would see a seperate drive for each physical disk. In spanning mode, the OS would see a single drive that was as large as the total capacity of the drives added together.

Hi,

So in JBOD mode, what would happen to the rest of the drives if one failed? Would you have to go through any special hoops to get data off? And lets say that I've got a few hard drives that I want to put in JBOD mode-- do I have to format them first?

It all seems a little too conveient to be true-- four drives connected by one USB cable? :)

If you set JBOD on the 4 drives, if one of them fails, say bye bye to all your data.
