help with my first nas

With the vast majority of the users here being rather savvy, a vendor lock-in model imposed by the Drobo is a definite no-no.

I'll second Synology. If you want the features of a Synology and go the DIY route, you could consider Xpenology (an operating system)

+1 to Synology.

Unlike the proprietary nature of Drobo, a Synology is just a small Linux server and utilizes Linux kernel RAID. So you could take the drives out of a Synology and mount the array in any Linux box.

hmm. i'll be able to download music to my phone from "my cloud", stream movies to a laptop at home, use the nas as the location for my itunes media and push and pull from it at will?

I'd consider getting a small micro-server like the Dell T20. It was recently on sale for $199.
