Ok, I just never learn. I started upgrading my office pc on Tuesday and finally got finished last night...mad and ready to smash the #$%#@ pc.

I tried restoring an image backup made with Norton Ghost 9 (but stupid scandisk ran on one boot and fixed some things on my backup hd...right) anyway that corrupted my back up image. I used Norton Ghost to delete my C: partition thinking that might help it restore it.

Anyway, after all that...my C: partition was gone. I used my Windows XP cd and created a new 10 gig partition to replace the old one. When I did, Windows assigned it drive letter F: So, now my primary boot paritition is F: I've tried changing that in Admin Tools in Windows and can't do it.

My question...is there any non-destructive way to change that back to C:?

Nope, you can't change the system volume's letter once it's installed. Some people will say it's possible, but they always fail to mention the PC doesn't boot afterwards.

Well, crap! I hate my primary drive being labeled as F:

So, there's no way I can delete that partition and re-create it and get it as C:. Doing any kind of backup will backup the letter info as well. Dang MS!

If you delete the partion at the start of Windozes setup and recreate it, it should come back as the C: drive unless one of your other drives is has got the C: letter.
Nowadays if I ever nuke my C: drive I always reboot at that point as it frees the C: letter so it can be reused. Thats whats happened here.
I also tend to unplug all my other drives so Windozes wont put the boot files on the wrong drive.

Luck............ :D

I just started for scratch and wipe everything out and only put that hd in and got it back like I wanted it.

Thanks everyone!

With a system like that, it probably didn't take too long. Good call on starting from scratch.

Well, actually this system in my signature isn't the one I was working on. It's one of my office pc's and it's an AMD Sempron 3000...but still didn't take that long :)
