Alright, this is for my GF's friend. I didn't pay much attention to what she said because she speaks real loud on a phone.
Anyway, this is what I gathered from her speaking to me. Whenever she tries to open Internet Explorer. Her computer will freeze and she will get a Blue Screen.
She doesn't know what it says, and since I don't live near her, neither do I. Have any of you heard anything like this before?
From what my GF tells me, she has a really old PC, and she is running on Windows 98.
I told her to reboot and try to get that message up again so I can forward it to you guys.
In the meantime post what you think it might be.

It's the microsoft virus......

Ok well when I get calls like this at work I
1. Get them to scan for virus's (Sometimes it's impossible if this happens all the time)
2. Scan for spyware/adware
3. start disabling startup items until it becomes stable and turn them back on one by one until you find out what is crashing it. Then if it's something important I re-install it. If not I just leave it disabled.

I tried explaining this to her.
She has no idea IF she has a virus scanner.
And she also can't go on IE to get ad-aware.

I geuss she's SOL

Distance trouble shooting when the user has no idea how to even help, or follow instructions...yeah...SOL.

This thread makes me damn glad I don't do chump support anymore.

It's 98, and on someone like that's computer, it probably hasn't been reinstalled in 6 years. 98 just does that kind of stuff for no reason. Sounds like it's time for a format :)

Yeah next time my GF goes over there I'm packing her with a WinXP Disc :D

If you have access to a server and have a lot of patience. (I'm well aware that my spelling sucks and that's probably wrong)
Set it up so she can ftp it. And tell her letter by letter what to type for the command line ftp.

Stress that if she doesn't listen to you and just do what you ask her to than you will not be able to help her. I find that once you say something like. "Look if you aren't willing to listen to me there's no point in even trying to help you" they usually will start listening.

Good luck!
