Help - Why is the volume difference so high

My old desktop has an ancient PCI Sound Blaster Recon and my nephew has on board audio. How can 10% global/master volume on my desktop be louder than his 20-30% global volume under the same test conditions?

I use an old pair of HD 595's and I bought him a pair of HD 598's. The only difference is I have PCI 3.5mm running Windows 7, and he is using the front audio out from his case running Windows 10.


Are the 3.5mm ports providing variable amounts of current/voltage? Is it a driver issue? Or is audio volume variable across boards?
 
There is really no standard when it comes the amplification ability of soundcards (including onboard). Sometimes they don't even have relevant amplification, but only a "Line Out" which is not designed to power anything directly, but rather be fed into an external amp (Computer speakers, receiver, headphone amplifier, etc). Most creative cards come with decent amplification, more than enough to power most headphones directly, so it doesn't surprise me that your creative card has more useful amplification than your nephew's onboard. Tell him to get a cheap external headphone amp, or a soundcard with better amplification.
 
I usually have to stay under like 30% if I don't want to go deaf with my HD598's and sound blaster Z

Stopped using my Z because of this. Bree volume ramped up much too quickly with the headphones I have.
 
thanks for the replies.

After searching further apparently this card has an amplifier that can drive 600ohm headphones which I never knew.... I thought only the $300 Asus had DAC/AMP but I was wrong.
 
also, I think drivers may influence volume. I seemed to get a volume boost installing creative drivers rather than the windows 10 automatic drivers.
