I JUST finished installing my new system. New gigabyte motherboard, new seagate 320GB hard drive, new video card, new screen. Ok.

So I install windows and I see NTFS has a 130GB limit. I understand the limit is set by the windows version, but I install it anyway thinking that I'll patch it with SP2 later.

Now, I'm encountering a number of weird problems such as described in this quote :

SYMPTOMS
If your computer has an ATA Packet Interface (ATAPI) hard disk that is larger than 137 gigabytes (GB), you may experience any of the following symptoms:
Your computer may restart instead of resuming from hibernation.
You may experience hard disk corruption when your computer enters either standby or hibernation.
You may experience hard disk corruption when Windows XP writes a memory dump file as a result of an unrecoverable Windows error (or Stop error)
Note If you experience hard disk corruption, you may also experience other symptoms including problems starting, restarting, or shutting down Windows XP, problems running programs, or problems opening or saving documents.

My Nvidia Control Panel crashes on launch, and when I right click / save as - a picture from the internet, it doesn't save it and says the file doesn't exist. If I drag/drop it, it is corrupted.

What the ...

Other than that everything's great, its just that I dont like having errors when I launch windows for the first time!

When I shutdown my magic rotation software also doesnt close properly and crashes. Wow, that's weird!

Could it all be caused by my NTFS drive? Is the drive faulty or is it just not working well on the current partition that was set-up by windows boot disc?

Thanks!

My dvd drive is unable to read a disc it read yesterday during system isntall... It's unable to read any disc at all right now actually...

I highly doubt it is the disk, but it's always a possibility. You've put together a new system so there are tons of things that could be wrong. Do you possibly have SATA1.5 drive, but 3.0 controller or vice versa and jumpers checked for proper mode on the drive? Is the PSU good enough to handle the new system components and are there no issues with yours? Is the memory having compatability issues? Proper timings? One bad stick? Both? Is the voltage set OK for it? Proper BIOS settings for everything else? Since it's easiest test and a common problem, I'd run memtest on the memory first to see how that goes.

Are you overclocking this machine? Memtest and prime95 would be good ideas.

It's not overclocked, and the system was built by a tech. I just installed the OS.

I'll try both softwares.

HD: Seagate 320gb ST3320620AS,(DISK)
Board: Gigabyte 965P-DS3 x.x
DVD: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B SCSI CdRom Device
RAM: OCZ DDR2-800 1024 MBytes+0+1024 MBytes+0

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz

My CPU fan goes a 950 RPM, I'll try memtest if I can burn the iso ;)
You can disable that "feature" in the BIOS to have the fan run at full speed all the time if you want, I certainly would. My friend has this board but I can't point you to the setting by memory. It should be easy to find.

I also get a dwwin.exe failed to initialize error at shutdown...

I'm running Prime95 stress test (memory) right now it seems pretty stable? Don't know what I hsould be looking for, it's at test 4 now.

What's the ebst tool to burn memtest86+-1.70.iso on my pc? I don't have any software so far installed.

My dvd drive doesn't show anymore in My Computer, it did when I rebooted earlier.

The stress test ran 16 minutes with 0 errors.

I need to burn memtest iso shouldn't be too long.

Could my IDE controler be the problem?

I booted and my windows told me "Found new hardware" IDE Controller

It's Gygabyte GBB36X Controller

It says it didnt pass windows logo testing and it could destabilize the system.

Ok, windows warnings are lame, but the thing is : its the first time it detects this hardware over the 8 restarts of my computer ;)

What should I consider the problem : my old dvd drive, the IDE controler, some drivers or the bios? I think it could be my problem.

In fact, my instinct tells me that it's the problem I just don't know how to fix it.

Everything runs faster and smoother without the dvd drive. Images will save too.

When I enabled the GBB36X Controler in my Device Manager (which I had disabled for some tests and to update my driver) I got a blue screen and the computer re-booted itself.

It's in the SCSI and Raid controlers section, weird.

I installed the JMicron IDE controler from JMicron's website and the drive seems to be detected now. I'll have to test this a bit more but it seems stable now. I'll have to find the stable drivers for my LG burner and see if it works.

Hopefully that solves it. If I remember correctly, the IDE port is an add-on from Gigabyte since the 965 chipset doesn't support IDE anymore, but I don't remember having to F6 during Windows install to get his optical drive recognized since this was what Windows was running from obviously. Apparantly the "Gigabyte" controller is JMicron(?) and your set.
