Help! Video Mode Not Supported Error

On several games when they load I get an error message that pops up against a black screen and says "Video Mode Not Supported". However, I can hear the game running in the background but I can't get any video. I finally have to just turn my PC off to get it to respond. In addition to my system specs (at the bottom) I have a Samsung 193v 19" LCD. I have tried changing the resolution from everything to 800x600 to 1280x1024 at varying refresh rates (60Hz to 85Hz) but nothing seems to help. I can play games like Far Cry, Half-Life 2, Doom 3, etc. just fine but other games like Valusoft ones continue to crash with the video error message. I also have tried all the nVidia drivers from the 66 series all the way to beta 75s with no luck. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
 
Its sounds like the monitor could not display with the requested refresh rate. Did you install any refresh rate fix utility, like 'Reforce' for example ? check if you have such utility installed and if you do, try reverting the old settings back.

And also, it wont hurt to check if the game with problems get updated/patches.
 
ech3lon9, thank you so much for the suggestion. I found the problem and it was the NV Tweak utility which was forcing the refresh rate. I had installed it to overclock my 6800 GT and didn't realize it had arbitraily installed the refresh app as well. The games work like a charm now!
