Okay. I am a complete noob to overclocking and would like to try with my new PC I am building. I am getting the P4 2.6 Processor with an Abit IS7-E Mobo 1 Gig Kingston Ram and ATI Radeon 9600 128 vid card. I bought the retail processor but am being told (and reading) that to overclock I need to get a better heat sink / fan. I was told that the Thermalright sp-94 (I believe) is good but what do you all think? Also is it worth looking into getting active memory cooling? Thanks for your help in advance! (Ill probably ask more specifics on overclocking once parts arrive)

I also forgot to add that I am looking into getting a temp display for CPU and possibly a fan controller (good idea?) Could you list some good products for this? The case I am getting comes with an internal temp display so I was thinking maybe a read for CPU and anything else you might suggest. Again thanks all!

First thing to do is check your temperature with motherboard monitor or whatever utility you like. Check the idle temperature and the load temperature. Then run tests like memtest and prime95 and 3dmark to make sure its stable and will pass the tests at stock settings.

Then increase the front side bus a little (since you are new go in little steps, like 3 MHz).

Run the tests again, watch the temperature while they are running. If it gets over 50ºC it might be too high (it can go over 50ºC safely, but what happens in the summer when it's hotter...). If the tests fail then you've gone too far.

If those pass you can bump it up another notch. Retest & repeat.

Active memory cooling is next to useless.

Remember EVERY CPU IS DIFFERENT. Yours may not go 1 MHz faster than its factory setting if you're unlucky.

Oh and finally www.google.com research and learn about mroe advanced stuff like voltages and cooling.

Thanks a bunch! Is there any Heatsink/Fan that you would recommend I get to keep the CPU cool?
