Help Setting uP SSD drive!

This is my first SSD drive the Samsung 830 128 gig. Cant wait to install it! What tips do I need to know beforehand? Does the firmware or anything else need to be updated or anything else need to be setup up or is it just plug n play? Also, is it best to put games,progs, & OS all on the SSD drive or should I put them on the back up drives? I have two 80 gig 7200's. Thanks for the help!
 
Well if you want the performance of the SSD, you'll have to install those games/programs on the SSD. Programs or games that do not take advantage of the SSD should be installed on HDDs to save space. As for games, I would install the games I'm currently playing on the SDD, then use Steam mover (assuming Steam is how you're installing the games) to move games I've completed/don't play often to the HDD.
 
Not all games support SSD? Skillz is the SSD just plug n play or I need certain files & firmare update?
 
It's not a matter of whether or not it's supported, it's just the game(s) or program(s) might not take advantage of the advantages that SSD has over HDDs. When space is an issue, it's best to only put what you need on the SSD.

With that being said, it doesn't take any special settings to install an SSD. Though I would put it on a SATA III port if one is available on your system. It's possible the SSD could max the throughput of SATA II.
 
hmm the mobo says it supports sata 3 but on the actual mobo i only see markings for sata 2....I have a gigbyte ga-p55a-ud3

That's because it's an "external controller" that does the SATA III. It's built into the motherboard, but it's not part of the chipset.

If you look, you'll see the white GSATA3 ports. They are side facing ports, not facing upwards. The run on the MarvellR SE9128 controller.
 
Ahh I see skillz! I didnt notice them bc I had my current HDDs plugged into those ports! lol Does that effect anything if my Sata 2 drives were plugged into those ports? Ever since I setup this PC I have been getting strange lag issues. Im hoping the SSD will fix that.
 
Trust me when I tell you that you are better off using the Intel SATA2 ports than the Marvell SATA3 for your OS SSD drive. 90%+ of the time your OS is reading small random files, which the Intel excels at (being part of either the chipset or CPU depending on model) and those random accesses rarely approach SATA1 speeds let alone SATA2. The accessory controllers are rarely the right idea.

If your drives are connected to those ports and the PC is giving you some issues, then try using the SATA II connections instead. Let that run for a while. As mwroobel pointed out, you are likely not to exceed the SATA II throughput anyway, but if you are moving large files around and/or loading large files then SATA III might benefit you with the SSD.
