Help reading p4 specs

hey, my dad gets old dells from his office to borrow when they do not use them. Recently we received a 1.7ghz Williamette. I am sort of new to this thing, but is your memory supposed to run at the same speed of your FSB? I am using SDRAM PC133 and the FSB is at 100. I am not sure if I am right... :( Correct me?

As long as the memory speed is the same or greater than the FSB of the CPU, you're good to go.
 
Memory speeds don't have to FSB match speeds. The Willamette P4 has a 100MHz QDR FSB. QDR = quad data rate, so 100MHz QDR = 400MHz effective speed.

Bleh, SDR memory. That must be the original Intel 845 chipset.

This has nothing to do with your original question, but i'll post it anyways. ;) PC133 on a P4 is a huge bottleneck. PC133 memory has a 1.06GB/s bandwidth. The data bus on the 400MHz FSB P4 has 3.2GB/s bandwidth, so PC133 provides nowhere near enough memory bandwidth. Ideally, a 400MHz FSB P4 would use PC3200 DIMMs (single channel). That system predates intel's first DDR chipset, so it's not like there was a choice to put in a chipset and memory that didn't exist yet.
 
Ok thanks guys, but I was wondering, does AMD use any of these QDR things? Lol I have an Athlon XP at 2400+, but the motherboard was old enough to use SDRAM... So my FSB is at 133mhz, but what about that QDR thing? Does it apply to my AMD and cause a huge bottleneck like it does to a p4?

wrong, otherwise the ram runs out of spec, some can... most don't... unless you thought I meant total effective FSB... but he knows the difference judging from his original post. Once you understand the P4 is quad-pumped, AXP's are doubled and A64's run at 200... you know what type of ram to get and the FSB the memory runs at.
