My raid array seems to be dying. Its 2 250 gig western digital sata drives on the silicon image controller of my abit IC7-G. I have backups of about half of whats on there, and I was just getting around to backing the rest of it up to dvd so that I could go back to just 2 individual disks, and now I can't burn, or copy from the drives. I just did a fresh reinstall, so all the drivers are right. I installed nothing else but nero, and now I get burn errors saying error reading data. Also, if I try to copy anything off the array to other drives, it starts ok, but then says its going to take 1000's of minutes, and just stops. I can still read all the data ok, and I seem to be able to playback video and stuff on the array, but I can't copy or burn.

Any ideas on how I can at least copy the data onto one of my other drives so that I can burn from there and then repeat?

Yes yes, i know raid 0 was stupid, it was just an experiment that I never bothered to change. its not like Im going to lose anything terribly important, but it took me a long time to collect the stuff I have on there, and I'd like to get to burn it to dvd.

seriously, anyone? if i goto copy to another drive it says that its going ot take like 20 mins to move a 250 meg file.

Please somebody, a reply maybe? I can still see the files, and I can ever play the ones I have the codecs installed for, but I can't moved them anywhere, nor can I burn from them. Anybody have any ideas what might be causing this?

Yea, actually one of the folders does say that its read only, and I can't seem to change it. Hmmmm, maybe something got screwed up with that.

Permissions Are Cumulative
A user's effective permissions for a resource are the sum of the NTFS permissions that you assign to the individual user account and to all of the groups to which the user belongs. If a user has Read permission for a folder and is a member of a group with Write permission for the same folder, the user has both Read and Write permission for that folder.

FS Permissions Inheritance
By default, permissions that you assign to the parent folder are inherited by and propagated to the subfolders and files that are contained in the parent folder.

Understanding Permissions Inheritance
Files and subfolders can inherit permissions from their parent folder. Whatever permissions you assign to the parent folder can also apply to subfolders and files that are contained within the parent folder, depending on the inheritance option set for a given object. When you assign NTFS permissions to give access to a folder, you assign permissions for the folder and for any existing files and sub folders, as well as any new files and subfolders that are created in the folder.

Preventing Permissions Inheritance
You can prevent permissions that are assigned to a parent folder from being inherited by subfolders and files that are contained within the folder by setting an inheritance option set for a given object. That is, the subfolders and files will not inherit permissions that have been assigned to the parent folder containing them.

If you prevent permissions inheritance for a folder, that folder becomes the top parent folder. Permissions assigned to this folder will be inherited by the subfolders and files that it contains.

you are logged in as the Administrator I assume

Yea, I tried it from both my account (admin), and the actual admin account. I can't find a permissions problem. I am currently running server2k3, though the problem happened in XP too. I thought maybe server 2k3 would have been able to help me since its got less running in the background etc, but its not doing much better. I should have just stuck with it in the first place and never gone back to xp.

Well, when I'm less asleep I will have to look at that thread more closely. The thing thats weird is that I can still play all the video files fine, and it seems like most will copy (though they take 5 or more mins). It did this on xp too, though I did bounce between them a few times in a short period of time, because I was trying to fix some weird issues. Everytime I would almost have one OS right, then something would break, so I would try the other, and find another issue. At this point I just want to get my data back and then its time to ditch raid (since I am getting raid errors, or so it seems), and move to linux.
