Hello, i bought a old laptop a Compaq Presario 1800, was for under 70 bucks had everything cept the hard drive and ram, i bought the harddrive and ram. i thought i bought the right kind of ram but when the laptop boots up it shows the compaq screen then this message

CPU= Intel mobile Pentium III Processor 1000 MHz
640k System Ram passed
191m Extended Ram Passed

Invalid Memory Type: Serial Presence Detect (SPD) - invalid Checksum.
System Halted.

now when i take the ram out it boots fine and im instaling windows right now. i was told there was some onboard ram. which it looks like it does. but what ram should i use for this laptop? the memory i bought was Kingston Model number KTC311/128

i got it off ebay was brand new http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6761568385&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWN:IT&rd=1

any help be nice

Crucial is always the first choice for picking out ram for pre builds, even if you dont buy it from there, although they will take the memory back if you get it through them and then it doesnt work on your laptop.

Id still be curious as to why the stick you have doesnt work, its the same speed, but oh well, thats what you get for buying stuff like that of ebay i suppose.

Hope you get it working

You might have gotten a bad RAM ... or maybe the laptop is just picky ... why not order the one from crucial?
