What started off as random freezing and restarts for my professor's PC has gradually become worse.

He ordered a new PSU and an ASUS P5N-D motherboard, it did not fix the problem.

He has a Pentium D 3.0Ghz, OCZ DDR2 800 ram.

Windows XP setup would get to the finishing installation and hang.

We restarted, try again, it would hang.

We removed the heatsink, applied new thermal paste, because idling in the BIOS it was at 55C and his old thermal paste was dry.

Go to boot back up and it will not turn on, hook the Thermaltake PSU tester up to the new Coolmax PSU, it test bad. we hooked the older Antec 500w back up and it tests fine, however the PC will still not boot.

Now the board will not even post. It hangs on the Entering Setup screen. Every 10th or so boot it will enter setup, but go no where. When viewing the Post screen the farthest it will get is "C1E Bios Supported"

We are stuck.

Have you tested the ram and the hard drive? Have you set the timings and voltage for the ram?
Why in hell did you buy a coolmax PSU?

The first step is to unhook all the cd rom drives, hard drives, take out any extra cards you might have installed ect... and see if it will post then.

If it still will not post then you need to test the ram. If there is more than one stick in the computer pull them all out and try one stick at a time until you get one that works and then run memtest on it to make sure it is a good stick.

You have a bad piece of hardware somewhere. Finding out what is what makes computers fun.:D

Has has 2 7800gt cards, we tried each individually. We swapped hard drives, still does nothing. We willtry removing one stick of ram as soon as this class is over.

There's a list of things to go through in the troubleshooting sticky. Please post results of those tests.
