Help OC a 965 BE

I'm about to do my first OC and would like some feedback on the best and safest way to do this. I have read and read on here as well as other forums but I still am unsure how to go about this. What is the easiest way to do this? My motherboard has an automatic OC function but when I did applied it it went from 3.4Ghz to a whopping 3.5Ghz! :rolleyes:

Here are my specs:

Phenom x4 965 BE
4GB G. Skill Ram
ASUS M4A87TD
Sapphire 6850
HAF 922 case
Corsair 650 watt PSU
Cooler Master 212 Plus


Right now the stock CPU is at 3.4 GHz and from the research I've done on this forum 3.8GHz is highly likely while 4GHz is more risky.
 
With my 965, i upped the multiplier to 20, and left the FSB at 200MHz. I upped the voltage to 1.5v, even though the thing runs perfectly fine on 1.4675. My chip hates anything over 4GHz, but is super stable at 4GHz on my H50 cooler. Max temp is around 130F(54C) while benching or playing black ops. I use PhenomMsrTweaker to have custom p-states so it doesn't burn 100F(38c) at idle. Instead it chills along at around 80F(27C)
I have also upclocked my NB, SB, and their voltages, while not necessary.
 
i have a 955 @ 4ghz 1.55v using an archon setup with dual fans. i idle at 30c-32c and max out at around 50c-52c (depending on ambient).
 
since you have the 212+ which is a good heatsink.. you could do it either of the ways i'll mention below though the second option is much easier..

first way you could do it.. raise the multiplier one step at a time and stress test between each one.. once it fails pump the cpu voltage up and do the same process..

easier way and the way i always do it with phenom II processors. set the voltage to 1.5v and raise the multiplier 1 step at a time. since we know 3.6Ghz will automatically be stable at well under 1.5V i typically start at that point and work my way up from there til it finally becomes unstable. once that happens i'll raise the voltage to 1.55v if its still unstable then i pretty much write it off that, that is the highest the processor will go. from that point i go back to the last stable multiplier and then work my way down from 1.5v to find the lowest stable voltage for that overclock..

second option sounds like a pain in the ass on paper but its not.

depending on what 965 you have. if its a C2 3.8-3.9Ghz is the typical norm.. the C3 stepping typically hits 4-4.1Ghz with a few reaching as high as 4.3Ghz on air.
 
I believe most C3 965 like to reach 3.8 ghz at 1.4v. I found that was the sweet spot with mine, anything beyond that requires massive voltage increases. I don't know if it has changed since then, I got mine almost right when they came out.

Change the NB frequency to 2400 mhz, and the HT Link frequency to 2000 mhz. Always manually set and keep the HT link at 2000 mhz, that's where it likes to function at, and increasing it only leads to instability with no performance gains. On the other hand, higher NB frequency makes your system feel more responsive like opening programs.
