Help needed, random slowdown on 4870

Very unhappy with my new 4870 so far. I've tried clear sky, Warhead and Grid and all seem to suffer from random slow down. I get 65 to 70 fps maxed out on Grid and yet it'll suddenly take a nosedive into the 30's for no apparant reason. Clear sky is even worse, at the starting camp it just goes into slow motion for random periods. I've checked temps and they never go much above 60c. I cleaned my old Nvidia drivers out before installing. Anyone got any ideas?
 
I've had that problem at various times. With my current Vista install, I stripped it down to the bare-minimum...no 3D desktop, no indexing, no sidebar (I miss my newsfeed gadget :( ), and I think most importantly, I uninstalled most of SP1 and most of the other Windows Update malware that Microsoft spoon feeds into your computer and turned-off automatic updates altogether.


The memory leaks cleared up.... I just ran through Clear Sky almost perfectly ( a few crashes due to page file issues with my system, but no random slowdowns or "ghost lag") and all my other games run fine.


My guess is it's not the video card. I've experienced the same issue with both ATi and nVidia.

Weird.

I do a complete reformat when going from nvidia to ati but while there are known issues with War and Clear, Grid is supposed to FLY on Ati.

Maybe it is down clocking during games or you have a HD paging issue due to needing more than 512mb or video mem. Clear Sky can use more than 800mb or vram at high settings/res.

That is why I am saving up for a 1GB gpu.
 
Thanks for the feedback guys. Grid does fly, I get 70fps maxed out with 4xAA most of the time, then the fps just dips for no apparent reason!
I'm tempted to send it back and just stick with my old 8800GTS640. Wait for the next big leap.
 
Yeah 1920x1200 uses 800mb and up now. This is due to the textures mostly. That is why all of the high end cards have more than 800 mb now.
