Help, my A64 System is Unstable!

I had that problem too, I had to download the bios flashing program (award flash) and boot of a DOS floppy. If you want IM or pm me and i'll walk you through it.

k, UPDATE:

i've flashed the BIOS and now i can set RAM speeds and what not, but it still doesn't detect my HDD. so my CD Burner is my IDE0 Master :(

what to do?
 
Okay, Bro...

You will need two PATA (80 wire is best, the ones that connect the IDE drives). Most (all?) manufacturer's recomend that optical and HDD are on separate chanels.

One drive must always be master on each connection... your HDD/Optical drives should have marking on them to set them (HDD should be master on IDE0, 1st Optical master on IDE1). You set these using "jumpers" (little plastic caps) on the back of the drives.

I don't know your level of knowlege, so let me know if you need some additional information.

Some ide cables are keyed so that one plug has to be master and the other plug has to be slave. That is why there is a "cable select" option for the drive's jumpers to go along with "master" and "slave". Just something to look into.

Athlon 64s suck with memory timings. There are known huge incompatibilities with certain IC chips on some motherboards ,Gigabyte comes to mind, The machine can not boot and achieve stability with PC3500 spec SPD memory. I forget which reviewer did the roundup it may have been good ol tommy boy hard ware, but with a bios update he managed to get fair compatibility with that motherboard and most brand memories.

That said.....

Update your bios, especially if the manufacturer states it will increase memory compatibility.

See if you can exchange your memory for PC3200. The SPD is the problem. Just because is says its PC3200 does not mean that it can not overclock. Cough samsung cough cough...

Keep your memory and relax your timings. RMA any memory that you can not get to pass memtest for a 12 hour period. Watch test 3, 5, and 7! First and formost.
