so I've been looking around and doing some research, and it looks like the canon a75 or a80 or maybe the nikon cool pix 3700 is around what I want, but I figured I'd give you guys a list of my desires and tell me if the perfect camera exists.

under $400
3-4 megapixels, pics of pretty good quality
I'd like something not fixed focal length so I can do some decent zooming if I want to
ability to take "decent" movies w/ sound (I think the nikon could take 640x480, while most others I only saw 320x240)
decent to good battery life (I don't even know what the typical range for today's cameras is)
fits in my pocket (I'm a guy, so I wear clothes that I can fit more than a quarter or two into :D )

so. let me know your opinions, and good places to buy online.

i've heard rumors about a canon a85, dont know what the cost will be, but should be pretty  i have the a75 and really like it.

Yup. Its coming out in the fall. Gonna be the same price as the A80 RIGHT NOW. Not when the A85 comes out. The A80 will drop in price and the A85 would be around 399.

I'd have to certianly recommend the A80 for ya then. Got everything you're asking for, and then some. :)

Another vote for the A80, that is what I have, and with a good set of 2300 mAh batteries, i get about 1200 pictures per set of 4, with the screen always on.

Pretty much all point and shoots have a zoom in their fixed lenses -- that really shouldn't be your concern. Most point and shoots under $400 have a 3x zoom.

As for places to shop online, B&H photo, KEH, Adorama are all good sites...

check out ResellerRatings.com for some info on online stores.
