I have been waiting on Dell's 2405fpw to launch. I have a personal friend who works in sales and he just gave me a great price on the display. I really want to pull the trigger on this thing!

But, I would need to upgrade from my 9800XT video card to either an X800XT PE, X800 XL, or X850 XT PE. I require AGP and I have found these cards at various sites.

At the same time, I've read this forum and searched the web on R520 possibly released in May, with an AGP counterpart released thereafter.

I just don't know what to do. Should I continue to wait? Will R520 even be out in that timeframe? Will the R520 even be in AGP? Or, should I go with what's available today and just start enjoying the upgrades?

I realise these are difficult questions, as no one has a crystal ball. But, I think the R520 could be a significan improvement over X850 - particullarly when running 1920x1200. I just worry that the X850 may be pushed really hard at that res, even without AA & AF in games.

Any insight as to what's happening over the next 90-120 days and your thoughts on the current vs. near future cards will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Personally what I'd do is get what is out now. The R520 who knows if ATI will release enough as to where you'd even be able to get one at a decent price.

I'd either go with the 6800 Ultra or the X800 XT. I'm running the X800Xt.

If the 9800 supports the displays native resolution, and has dvi output, then why would you want or need to upgrade the card now. I think you have time, enjoy your new display and keep an eye out for future graphics technology that will actually mean something. Of course if you want to play at the highest resolutions supported by games like HL2, then a card upgrade is appropriate.

WOW, fast responses. You guys are awesome and so is this forum.

Good suggestions.

I do want to play games and get decent performance. I know my 9800XT can't handle those resollutions at enjoyable frames, even with no AA & AF - seeing as I don't like the performance of the games I play at 1600x1200 no AA & AF. I mostly play at 1024x768 4XAA 8XAF to get the best frames for games (e.g. 85 fps in UT2K4 while online - that's its cap).

A video card is a necessary upgrade for me with the purchase of this display.

I'll keep watching in case any other comments come in.

Thanks for your help, guys.

Rick,

I took your advice and ordered an X850 XT.

I think if R520 does come out in a few months, I will sell this card, take the hit, and get the new one. But, I can start enjoying things now. And who knows, there may not be an AGP product on the new core for 6-9 months if at all...

Thanks,
