Help Me Pick the Pump

I personally bought #3 because it is going in a lian li v300 case, but ive owned the mcp655 in the past and it was excellent in the same setup you will be using.
 
All but the DDC are the same pump so if it comes down to one of those three just find the cheapest of the three.
 
technically your #1,2,and 4 are the same pumps. So if you are going with that one definately just pick it up wherever you can get it the cheapest.
 
Alphacool Laing DDC Ultra (also called the DDC plus) would perform a bit better in MOST systems becuse of the higher head, but it wont make a huge diffrence in actual cooling. Just get the cheapest.
 
Out of those,

#1, 2, 4: It's a great pump. Same as each other though.
#3: With the alphacool top, it's a great pump, and small too.

I'd get an AquaXtreme 50Z, just because of the low heat-dump, smaller size, and because my personal experience with it is good.

Head means very little when not factoring in flowrate. If a pump has a maximum head of 14 meters - something quite outlandish - and flows 1gpm at zero head, then it's not such a great pump for our purposes. It may still be a good pump, but only shines if you're using a baker's dozen waterblocks.

I'd also go with an AquaXtreme 50Z. It combines great performance characteristics with a surprisingly low heat output.

Well guys I must admit I'm very confused. I thought the MP655 was the strongest and best choice of all for the price now it seems like the AquaXtreme 50Z-DC12 is another contender.

I'm confused with the results of this review (It seems like the MP655 outperforms this pump just for a little bit):

Just get the 655 for $69 bucks, you won't see much difference performance wise between it and the 50Z and you'll save some cash.

The 50Z design really concerns me though, it actually has an electric motor that drives the impeller via a magnet, that's more bearings to wear out whereas the 655 only has one bearing. The impeller is driven by induction.

True, but consider that it's a completely sealed mag-drive, where the entire front unit is removable, replaceable, and also rotatable for best location. Add to that a low heatdump, low noise, and you have an insanely awesome pump.
 
I'd still rather not have 3 bearings (2 of which are not water cooled nor lubricated) to worry about when I could just have one. Less moving parts, less to worry about.
 
I'm not crazy about the 50z either... D5 or DDC+ gets my vote. Hell, I'm switching from an Iwaki RD-30 to 2 DDC Ultras.
 
Hey, I didn't even know Lee reviewed the 50Z. Neato.

After examining his findings (because there's really nothing better to do on my week off than examine testing results of various PC watercooling pumps), the MCP655 is probably more favorable if the coolant/air exchange is effecient. If there's a situation where you're dealing with small radiators or radiators that aren't getting much airflow, the 50Z is probably a better bet due to its fantastically low inline heat dump (probably on the order of 6-8 watts) while the 655 may dump twice this much. If you're using two blocks, as the OP is going to be doing, then this could really go either way. The flowrates using the 50Z may not drop quite as harshly as the 655's, but the 655 will probably still flow more and probably negate the heat dump penalty. This is pretty "ballpark" stuff here, really - the difference between the two pumps might be as little as a couple of tenths of a degree at the CPU die. The MCP655/D5 will still be louder and larger, of course.

50Z's about as loud as the 10W DDC, and they'll perform similarly. So it's a bit of a toss-up. The DDC is a more effecient design, though, and with a top outlet/side inlet mod or a new top, it blows the 50Z away - but again, we're still in tenths of a degree terrirtory here.

Yea, they're all good choices. DDC + alphacool top, 50z, or 655.

Apologies to the OP but this is a little detail thing which has been bothering me for a while... The heat dump of these is not some fixed absolute.

Here's a quick example which pertains to the D5:

Now, as you can see, that nominal power consumption rating of 24W is only attained at 0 (zero) head pressure and, thus, max flow. As the head pressure increases, the flow decreases and with that decrease in flow comes a decrease in power consumption. So, realistically, in most cooling loops, the D5 will be dumping 20W or less even at setting 5. Anything below setting 5 and the power consumption drops off real fast. The same thing applies to the 50Z, iirc, despite it being a more conventional mag-drive.

Anyway... When it all comes down to it, the flow performance of the 50Z and the D5/MCP655 gets closer and closer as the head pressure increases. The 50Z would eventually pull ahead but only when used in a very restrictive loop. So, really, unless you're stuck with a tiny radiator or are using a really low restriction loop, they're pretty much interchangeable with a slight edge going to the D5/MCP655. The difference in heat dump between the two pumps, in most situations, is likely negligible when talking about overall loop performance.

That's similiar to my setup, minus the Storm. Make sure you check all the fittings and make sure they are tight. My chipset block leaked at the barb and fried my board. I'm gonna use teflon tape when I transfer everything into my new case just for added safety. I opted for worm clamps on everything but I might experiment with zip ties this time around if I can get them tight enough.

I also had to grind down the Yate Loons since they have a solid shaft on each corner, you'll see what I mean when they arrive.

If you're careful, you could just use longer screws...
 
It should also be noted that all pump motors have two avenues of heat dissipation: via the coolant and via the external casing, which is most scenarios is designed to operate somewhat like a heatsink.

Inline heat dump for mag drive pumps (and centrifugal pumps as well) is stated by some to be in the 70% nominal power draw ballpark, though I think this is probably a little conservative - heat dump will usually tend to me higher.
 
Thanks for the tips guys... I'll see if I can use long screws for the fan and also still debating what to use to secure the barbs. So far for what I have been reading the 7/16" tubing will be tight enough to help with some leaks I understand will have to use hot water to slide it in.

Also I think I made a mistake with the radiator I bought but I wanted to have the best option for a single 120mm. I think just have enough space inside the case to place a single rad and was thinking on doing a sandwich with the fans. Basically

120mm Fan<-| RAD |<- 120mm FAN
