I'm slowly but surely rebuilding my gaming rig and one thing i miss is the speed of an SSD....I loved my 840 pro. Fast forward to now, I'm looking to spend between 100-125 on a 256gb SSD. I'm looking at the OCZ vertex 460a, Samsung 850 evo and the Crucial mx100. Which one is the better of the two? I'm also open to recommendations if there is a better choice. Also, the motherboard I have has a m.2 port for an SSD but I dont know exactly what it is, how it works or if it's better. Help me out HardOCP!!

Evo 840 or 850 if you have the $. Largest size you can afford.

Nothing beats the 250GB 850 Evo for the performance/price in that space, but thanks to the 840 Evo firmware problems i can't really recommend it. The 850 Evo does use the MGX controller while the 840 Evo uses the MEX controller so there is a chance that what afflicts the 840 Evo firmware is impossible with the 850 Evo, but that is a big IFF in my eyes. The EVOs have always been kind of flaky in my mind due to their reliance on clever software tricks to maintain performance. This is likely an irrational viewpoint, but it resonates with me somehow.

My "next up" recommendation would be either a Intel 730 series 240GB ($120) for your price ceiling, or a Crucial BX100 250GB ($99) at the bottom. You can't honestly go wrong with either, and you likely (almost certainly) won't notice a difference between either in normal "desktop" usage.

Crucial or Intel, because the 840 Evo sucks. Aside from synthetic benchmarks, you're not going to be able to tell the difference between drives A, B, and C. Real end of discussion.
