My rig is in my siggy.. and well I would like to try overclocking my CPU. Currently, I have the stock Heatsink w/ Fan; however, I have a lovely zalman heatsink coming in soon (CNPS9500) along with some artic silver. How far will I be able to overclock my cpu? Currently my temperatures aren't that good (47c), not sure what the problem is.. I believe it's the heatsink with the thermal pad on it.. I took it off a few times and the pad kinda got smooshed and torn up when i took the heatsink off. But no worries! the new heatsink is coming! For the time being I will look through these threads for more tips & tricks.. but any further stuff to help me would be greatly appreciated. In my bios is a ... auto-overclocking features selection.. not sure what to do.. but heck gotta get my hands dirty and mess with my computer once in awhile.

Your temps will drops significantly with an aftermarket HSF and AS5, dont worry about that.

I cant say how much you will be able to OC, probably to at least 245-250 if its a san-diego.

If something is going to hold you back, I think it will be that mobo

^ yea, that is probably a normal temprature for stock HSF

I would stick to doing things yourself, the auto overclocking features seem to pump too much of the vcore for the amount of MHz it's increasing by.

Oh..and remember, nothing is guaranteed in overclocking.

what utility should i use to overclock? The thing that came with my motherboard was the ATI system manager.. it think u can overclock that way... but how does the whole over clocking thing work..including with the ram..

gotcha.. read some stickyness

K, just read the stuff... i understand it all and i'm ready to overclock; however, i'm not going to start till i get the new heatsink w/ artic silver goodness. wow that was really easy.. I figured it would be a very difficult task but it doesn't seem that way now :D

250 eh? with a 12x multiplier that's 3Ghz.. I heard with a 4000+ san diego people won't go there unless they got water cooling..I don't want to strain the thing to much...I'll try doing things little by little to check stability and find good temps. :D

Yeah, it's pretty simple. Most people don't bother reading so they make mountains out of hills. That, or they try and screw up and complain about their weak overclocking chips.

Good stuff, these "sticky" things. ;)

considering my 3000+ can do 310x9 with 1.55v on air, i bet 250 isnt too far out there.

umm... your comparing a venice to a san diego?...ok.................... there is a bit of a difference between our cores.. one being that the venice is known to be an overclocking champ.. i'm sure that my san diego will overclock but not to the extent of a venice.. My San Diego is a E4 stepping and have heard they overclock better than the E6ers so we'll see.

lately the san diegos have been doing a bit better actually.. :p

ps, you can overclock with the stock heatsink with no problem, just leave the voltage at stock, or only increast it .05-.1v over stock to help combat heat. :D

i dunno i might run into trouble.. i mean stock voltage is at 1.35v and currently my machine idles at 47c... temp temp temp

then here's a good exercise:

drop the vcore to... say 1.25v

and then find the max overclock there :D

Read up on this guide, and post back once you've got your new HSF and overclock.

eclipse: life is so much better when you can direct them to a link and be done with it!

ok, new heatsink w/ artict silver 5 has been installed...though.. temperatures are only a few degrees lower than with the stock heatsink... right now it's at ... 41c.. from the original 47c.. i have to wait about 2 weeks for the thermal grease to be in proper working condition right?..

Did you use the amount of AS5 as is shown on #9 of these instructions, and did you make sure to clean off the old thermal paste using 90%+ purity rubbing alcohol? Just use a tiny dot, as is shown in the photo on #9, and let the heatsink spread out the paste when you screw it down. Essentially you want to use as little AS5 as possible, so a little dot will suffice.

And no, the breakin period is usually quite short. Also, after breakin it may only reduce temps by 1-2C

i've just overclocked my cpu from 2.4 ghz to 2.6 :D

lessee.. i did.. ram ratio of 183/200 x fsb 216 = 197.5

197.5 x 2 = DDR395 right? so i did good right?.. i didn't want to find max fsb and overclock it like crazy... perhaps i'll save that for a rainy day

i take it you didn't read the guide then. that's not how a64's ram speed is set.

i take it you're using a 12x multi if you have 2.6ghz with 216mhz..

12 / (11/12) = 13.09 -> rounds up to 14

2600mhz / 14 = 185.7mhz

check cpu-z, let's see if my guess was right ;)

well... when i check cpu-z.. it actually reports the ram being at 199.9 Mhz lol, also another thing.. it reports my voltage is at 1.792 wtf is up with that... i go into my bios it reports im running at like 1.35.. and say my cpu temp is at 33c when i boot windows up and check everest it says temps are at 43c..???

here ya go... some screenies

oh wow. First guess is to assume that everest isn't reading the voltage correctly. Is the system prime95 stable?

no i haven't tried that yet.. how long are you suppose to run prime95?

p.s. everest and cpu-z report that cpu v-core is at 1.79 even before i overclocked to 2.6ghz

as long as you'd like really..some people consider twelve hours to be prime stable, some twenty four, and others fourty eight. I'd first try running it overnight.

So is this voltage being reported even when you're at stock voltage?

yea.. it's wierd, i checked bios again and it says it's 1.34 v for cpu.. and motherboard is 1.7.. i dunno why everest and cpu-z read my cpu as 1.79 though. I think my temperatures should be lower.. everest reports right now that it's at 39; however.. im in an air condition room (it's pretty cold in here) and my side panel is off.

this is what everest reports:

hmmm... i think everest and cpu-z are reading my motherboard voltage.. cause i just changed the voltage on my cpu.. yet everest & cpu-z reports the same

have a look at your 2.5+ voltage: 1.34

and what would 'aux' be under temps? that might be your actual temps....run everest while you're running prime95, and note which temperature rises the fastest. My inclination is that the programs are just reading the wrong sensors.

two questions:

1. when you change cpu voltage, does that 2.5v change?
2. can you run the everest memory bench, i'm interested in seeing the bandwidth you get for read speeds. not sure if i believe cpu-z

here ya go

i haven't tried looking at the 2.5v when changing the v on core

ok.. i found some solutions.. if i go into cpuZ.ini and change the Vcore = 0 to Vcore = 1.. it fixes the problem.. it'll read the right voltage. Also, sapphire has release a bios that fixes this problem too i think.

so how far are you able to push it?
