Hey guys, the computer in my sig is the one on the OR right now. The operation is to make it silent. Right now its loud! its got 4 80 mm fans, a stock intel heatsink, and an All Power 500 w psu. Its been a few years since I've owned this and recently its breaking down so I got sick of it. Now my grandfather wants it and I want to make it silent for him. What do you think I should go with?

A. New Silent fans

B. My first watercooling system

One question about water cooling. Some people say that you have to fill the water again every so often is that true? cause if it is I don't want to have the responisbilty on him to fill it up.

It is not going to be oc'd at all btw.

i had a case that used 4-6 80mm fans at one time. loud as faak.

i'd say get a new case that utilizes 120mm fans.

you can watercool like you stated but having 2-4 80mm case fans is still gonna be loud.

one thing i did to my old case that had no less than 5 80mm case fans was to buy rubber washers from home depot and put them btwn the case and the fan. it helped but not where i wanted it to be.... so out went that case and in went a 120mm compatible case.

also, look into fan speed controllers.

If I were gonna be giving it to my grandfather, I wouldn't want it to be watercooled. So I'd got with silent fans. I really like my Nexus Real Silent fans. They make an 80mm version that is awfully quiet. If you get yourself a handful of those and replace the stock heatsink, you should be golden. You could just get rid of a couple of those 80's to help cut down on cost, too.

unless your grandfather is hardcore gamer (lmao), take out about half the fans and undervolt the rest and he can check email, surf the web, and look @ pr0n to his heart's delight. :)

Ic, most probably i'll get some zalmans or Nexus Real Silent fans and some rubber washers and just use that.

case that uses 120mm fans is a great start, get some of the antec tri-cools beause you can change them to be around 30dB which isnt bad at all. Then for a decent cooler that isnt huge like a ninja but cools pretty well is the silverstone Nitrogon. Its a little pricey, but its reletively small and cools just as good as most stock coolers. Plus, if you undervolt and clock the proc down to around 1.8 or even 2Ghz, it will be ample cooling. The only down side to it is that its about $45 so its a little pricey for the cooling you get, but hey, it looks bad ass and is decent at cooling.

Also, scrap that 500W PSU, take out the 9800 and leave the 512MB.

you can use the 500W PSU in your new rig, get him something like a 300 or something so that it wont generate as much heat and will consume less power from his power bill.

He will not need the 9800, if the mobo doesnt have onboard, just get him like a 5200 or 5500 card from nvidia, theyre about $35-40 on newegg.com and will be fine for his websurfing needs. On top of that, you can sell the 9800 for a shiny penny on ebay as a plus.

He will be just fine with 512MB of RAM unless he runs like PS:CS or something heavly, though unlikely. He could even get away with 256, but since you have the 512 in there, it will be fine.

Replace the intel stock hsf with a Scythe Ninja. I had that going fanless on my p4 2.8 and it ran flawlessly. I was even able to get it overclocked to 3.2 without changing the voltage. Of course then the temperatures would run too high. It stays relatively cool at the stock 2.8 though.

sounds like you got all the suggestions you need.

water cooling is high maintanence, by comparison to air (although cleaning that dust out is a bitch sometimes). so unless this guys like "omgwtfpwnzorzthiscompzorzBBQ" then stick with air.

keep the 9800. your not gonna make a profit off selling that on E-bay and downgrading to a 5200. you just wont find a buyer.

you actually would be suprised, i found a buyer on ebay for my 5500 because he needed an AGP card for an old computer that just needed some sort of graphics card because it had no onboard. It wont make a lot of money, but, it will make some non the less.

Thanks for all the suggestions, most probably ill get a new case, bigger and silent fans but i'm leaving all other components in it cause he lives with my cousins and I don't think its worth buying another video card and sticking it in and selling the 9800 pro. Most probably if it doesn't work for him then i'll probably gutting it.
(Right now there is a weird problem with the hdd or somthin, two hdds have died and a mobo has died thought it was psu but everything with that checks out fine so I RMA'd the hdd and put it in, let's see what happens.)

Get as many of the 120mm 4$ yate loons at 7v as you can fit inside the case he's got. They're practically silent at that temp. If he's got a case that can fit (well, mainly the motherboard as lots of intel boards use proprietary mounting schemes) a ninja, for less than 30$ you could run totally passive (or with the fan on 5v, totally quiet). How old is the computer? You'd be surprised how LOUD 3-4yr old hardrives can be. At my work we have a few of the first pentium 4 computers running for SKU and UPC lookup stations... The drives max out at 50db easily.

What would you hope to sell that AGP 9800pro for?
