i have a dremel accessory kit that i bought to use with my drill with the cutoff discs for cuttin plastics and mainly using the other pieces like sanding drums and grinding bits and what not

the other day i did a mod where i put a switch in a cd bay cover and it was a big rocker switch but i didnt have a drill bit big enough nor did i have a cup saw small enough so i used a dremel grinding stone bit to sorta sand thru a pilot hole i made with a smaller drill bit... i meant for it to grind the plastic into powder and fall and have it create a hole with possibly a lil molten plastic on the edges... little did i know that the melted plastic stuck to my grinding bit and it cooled and now its rock solid on it (i ll have a picture soon)

the grinding bit has a ring of thick melted plastic around it and its STUCK... i dont want to throw it away because this was maybe, the 4th time i used this bit... so i was thinking, can i put it on my drill and turn it on slowly so it spins slow and light the plastic on fire and when its burning most of the plastic, i spin the drill gradually to its max speed to throw off the molten plastic

is this a good idea?, or am i just screwing around with this

help me please, thanks

You could always just take your dremel bit with the plastic, run it over a bit of concrete for a few seconds, then wipe the rest of the plastic off. In either method (yours or mine) I strongly recommend some form of face protection, molten plastic on the skin hurts, molten plastic in your face is just nasty.

Just a suggestion - spinning off molten plastic sounds very, very bad - maybe use some petrol or acetone to try and dissolve the plastic? If the disc is made of reinforced material it should come through OK. Maybe go to a hardware store and ask them for something that dissolves plastic...

I've used a dressing stone to clean plastic off of a grinding stone before, but it basically does the same thing as running it over rough concrete

i believe that actually came with my dremel accessory kit

thanks, i ll check tomorow

does this totally get off all the plastic or is there going to be leftover plastic that fills the voids?

thanks

If I remember correctly, I was able to get pretty much all of the plastic off. I just kept going until it was clean.

if its stuck in the blank, i would take a knife or razor, and cut the exes plastic and try to slide the blank off the bit, pull you can pull off the plastic with a pair of pliers, and later when your using it again, (probably on metal) using it again will clean it off for you.

in the future... if you use the grinding stone, plundge it in slow and steady and pull it back out b4 you turn it off , (you will alwase have to deal with melted plastic) you can also use the cutting disk to make the hole ( cut in a * pattern, and keep doing it till you have your circle some times haning onto wheals that are smaller due to use are handy for this. and its a good idea to have glasses and a long sleaved shirt on, flying melted plastic can be a pain in the ass.

good luck happy modding

i dont think slicing the plastic will help it "slide off" because its gripped on very well... the grinding stone has a lotta small crevices for the molten plastic to flow into and dry there and i figured since it was hot when it melted in and wont come out as cool, i might set the plastic on fire to let it fly out or something

thanks, i ll try grinding it later

Yes, but the plastic is all melted TOGETHER, so if you can get it to break off, it will come off in one piece. A grinding stone does not really have crevices, it just has grit to it.

so then the molten plastic is stuck in between the grits... which causes a lotta friction in any attempts to remove it by "sliding it off"
