Hey all, I'm trying to fix my friend's girlfriend's comp, but I didn't really notice anything wrong with it.

The system boots fine, but when I try to start the programs she's having trouble with, like Office 97 programs, or AOL 7.0 (yeah, I know, horrid), the system hangs at their splash screens and I have to terminate the program.

Any ideas? I don't have a mouse to use with it, since I don't have the Windows 98 disk (and I only have USB mice). The hard drive doesn't seem like it's having a problem, but I don't know.

System specs are:
Pentium 2 450
128 MB
Some kind of Compaq CDROM
Two IBM hard drives
Windows 98

Well, unfortunately, all I have are Win 2K disks and XP disks.

How well would Win 2K run on this system? Also, any idea how to back things up to a floppy using only a keyboard? (as in, moving files onto a floppy disk with just the keyboard).

You could put 2k on it and it would run

I ran 2k on a P 233Mhz with 64Mb Fast Page ram and it ran 'ok'

All you need for that box is another 128Mb of ram and 2k will be good to go

Ive have 2k pro running on P1 with 32gigs of ram (I think) and a 2.5 gig HD (god I love that os)

if you can try and dual boot it and see if 2k works better for you or not, if you cant get driver support that you need, then you can kill 2k and still have your original os runing,... just a thought

dont you think 32 gigs of ram is a little overkill for a p1?:p

My suggestion just buy her a new computer will save you alot of trouble and you can have one of those crappy dells for $400 and they are not that bad for internet and word.

You could easily put XP or 2000 on that machine, although XP will run like shit b/c it only has 128mb of ram. Go with a format and clean install of 2000 or get ahold of a 98SE disk. Either one of those will be fine. And don't forget to BACKUP everything before you do this. It shouldn't take very long to rebuild it. It's probably worth a little effort if she doesn't need a power machine. Have her buy you lunch or something ;)

BTW, instead of trying to "Fix" her current issues, it'll most likely be less time consuming to format/reinstall on the machine, that way you know it all works right when your done and it saves you a lot of headaches.

Thanks for the help. Well, she doesn't need more than this system, since all she does is AIM and Word.

It turns out the thing that caused the system to stop responding was Norton AV running in the background. However, I think I'm gonna go ahead with a format and windows 2000 install, since the system hasn't been cleaned out or formatted since it was made 6 or 7 years ago.

And no, I'm not charging anything (not even lunch).
