My system EVGA E758-a1: i7 920 D0 @ 3.8ghz 1.35v with Corsair H50, 6gb corsair dominator, xfx 5870 & 4670

I know that is a decent clock, however I'd like to get it to 4ghz+ with 24/7 settings on it. What is the safest DIMM voltage for this ram, I currently have it at stock, but would it be safe to put it at 1.8v or so then try to bump the CPU up to 4ghz and see if it's stable again with Intel burn test? Are there any setting's that I should enable or disable in my BIOS as well? Also, I want to OC my SSD! :p Thanks for you all's help ahead of time with this matter.

As far as memory, I'd keep it potentially lower around 1.65 and use memory dividers to keep it near whatever it's rated speed is. What kind of cooler do you have on your 920? And while i think youre kidding, just in case youre not - I'd probably recommend against messing with your ssd.
 
I was kidding about the SSD, yes. What is a memory divider exactly? Also, I have an H50 w 2x scythe 120mm fans on my h50 for my i7 920.

Depending on the bios, the memory divider comes in different forms. Essentially, it's what makes your ram run at some fraction of the bus speed. Snce 1366 oc's purely on bus speed (other than Unlocked EE's), if your memory was forced to stay 1:1 locked to your overclocking it would run up the memory speed pretty quickly and potentially limit your CPU oc.

In some boards you specifically will choose the memory speed divider ratio, while others can show it just as the memory speed adjusted for your current bus speed. You use these to keep your memory at whatever their rated speed is even when your bus is pushed much farther for your cpu oc. For example, the similar d0 920 I was running until recently had the the memory running at 15xx (rated for 1600) when my BCLK was at 191 (191x21~4.0).

With a push/pull H50, I don't see any reason a d0 920 shouldn't be able to get 4.0, although sometimes a particular chip/mb just don't want to play nice. The chip may need a little more juice, and you may need to fiddle with some of the other settings like the PLL, but hopefully you can get there. And just in case - If temps are limiting you it may be worthwhile to try reseating.

My board was supposed to be one of the best for OC'ing my chip whenever I bought it from what I read on these forums and others at the time. There is a divider, but I currently have it set lower than 1:1 because if it was set 1:1 it would be at like 1800+ mhz right now (its only rated at 1600) and I tried it at that and it wasn't stable. So I had to adjust the divider to lower it, however I was just questioning what is a safe voltage to up this ram to in order to possibly make that 1800mhz doable. The ram has pretty good heat sinks on it (that's not my exact ram, but similar), and I have good circulation in the case. I was hoping I could add a little voltage to the ram to bump the ratio back to normal, and then try to reach 4ghz, as I'm not really comfortable upping the CPU voltage anymore from 1.35...unless upping the voltage would be okay with an H50? So basically I'm trying to figure out what's the safest voltage I can bump my ram up to, and also the safest voltage to run my CPU at (27/7).
 
First, you do not need more voltage for your RAM other than it´s specs.

First which BIOS are you running? Please update to 82 if you haven´t already. HERE

Memory settings - For your RAM. set the timings according to the sticker specs and set the Memory Frequency to 2:8. everything else auto.

CPU features - Intel speedstep disabled for now and QPI Frequency Selection to 4.8, everything else can stay the same.

Voltages - Everything auto until you are forced to raise something, you can set your RAM/DIMM volts to what it says on the sticker if you want. However at the bottom change PWM Frequency to 800.

On the page with the cpu frequency set, PCIE to 100 and Uncore to 16x. Everything else is ok. Start with the cpu clock at 160 the run 3 passes of linx, if it passes up it by 5 and repeat until you get BSOD´s, note if they are 101 or 124 errors.

also use something like realtemp to watch your temps as you run linx.

Report back when you get there and we will then begin to up voltages to get you above 4.0.
