help making a file server

alrighty. i was wondering what i need to make a file server. i should probably place this in the networking, but i was wondering what i should use. any extra ethernet ports? i got like 2 extra NIC cards. plenty of cable, a router *if needed*, but i dont have an operating system for the extra computer. so is there anything else i can use that wont require me to have windows? thanks for your help
 
ahh crap! i really posted in the wrong forum. this is PSU's! im sorry, i missed my click destination.
 
You don't need a router or an extra NIC to build a file server. Just use a single network connection and load some variation of Linux.
