Help - Just built PC won't start

Title really explains it all. This is my first self-built system, and things seem to be in the correct places... but there are problems.

1) The power button does nothing. When I turn on the power supply from the back, it starts giving power to everything, including the case's temperature gauge. When I try pushing the power button or the reset button, or even holding the power button to turn it off... there is no response.

2) There is no output to the monitor. I just got an x800pro vivo from powercolor, and that's what i'm starting with. It doesn't output anything to the monitor, though.

The led light on the mobo is on, so the mobo is obviously on... but something must be wrong. I've checked all my connections... I just can't figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Did you hook up the power button lead to the pwr switch header on the mobo with the correct polarity?

Yeah, it's in there correctly... but now that I look at the front of the case, none of the leds are lit up either... Although that could be because there is no hard drive activity. It should still show power status, though. It couldn't be a mobo short, could it?

Make sure everything is plugged in right. I had this happen to someone at work and the RAM wasnt seated correctly.

If you still cant get it to work, try building it outside the case

I got the power switch to work. Figured out it was a mobo short -- stupid me I forgot to use the spacers. However, there is still no display to my screen. Any ideas on that?

Edit - Also, the cd-rw drive shows a green light, but the floppy and dvd do not. When I try to open them, they don't respond.

You may have shorted out the board

I was somewhat hoping that was a fixable problem... but I guess now that I think about it... it's a little more complicated. Maybe I can get away with returning it saying it was defective... This sucks -- I need to take everything apart now, and the watercooling system was just setup

you're putting watercooling in your first built computer...

Heh, I guess I am. But I'm going with the koolance system to stay a little more on the safe-side. Plus it's not like the watercooling caused this problem. Is there anything else I can do?

i'm going with jacuzz1 above... putting a mobo in without spacers then running power through it probably shorted out several of the connections... i'd see if you can RMA it, as that is your best bet...

furthermore, i'd get everything running on air cooling and THEN put the water cooling stuff in... it avoids having to remove things a lot (fans are easier to remove then hoses)... once it's running on air, take the air components out and throw water stuff in there... that's how i put together any computer regardless of cooling method... get it running on air first, then upgrade it...

Thanks for the help, guys. I'll RMA the thing tomorrow and set it up with the spacers this time. I'll also take your advice, karma, and set it up on air until it's up and running correctly. Thanks again.
