Ok I got a new shuttle. Specs are:

SN95G
3200+ Winchester
512 DDR
6800NU OC
Maxtor 160G Hard Drive

When trying to install XP PRO, it gets to "Setup is starting windows" and it just shuts off. The BIOS says the temps are at ~53C idle, but inside it feels uber cool. I'm thinking that the BIOS is misreading the temps.

I got the Shuttle from an [H] member with everything already installed. I just added Ram and the 6800. He said his max load temps were 44C so I asked that he leave it intacted since I'm not the best with thermal paste. He left the HD, CD/RW, CPU all intacted. I get it today and its at 53-54C idle. I go to installed XP Pro and even tried 2000 Pro and it cuts off at the same exact place "setup is starting Windows". Since it shuts off at the same place everytime I do not think it could be an overheating issue. I have no clue what else to try though. Any help is good.
 
53 seems high. You may want to try to reseat the HSF. It may have dislodged during shipment or something.
 
Thats what I was thinking. Need to get more paste before doing so. But if it shuts off at the same EXACT spot each and every time how could it happen to overheat then and there everytime? Is there a guide to know how much to add and how to spread it or just leave it and push it down for Shuttle CPU's?
 
Oh and in the manual it says that if it reaches 80C the fan will kick in higher.... 80C is crazy high and so high so I don't think it would shut off at 60C either way. After a long day in Guild Wars on my Athlon64 it gets up to 68C.
 
yeah, the default smartfan setting is nuts. You can change the temp at which the fan speed ramps in the BIOS. Also, you can just set your fan to high, medium, or low. I normally run mine at the medium setting.

I was just thinking of another possibility. You may need to loosen the RAM timings a little or increase the Vdimm.
 
I loaded the fail safe bios and it still happens. Today I can get to were it says hit F8 to continue to I guess it is overheating. anyways I have no thermal paste. BBB you have any that you could possibly sell?
 
I'm the one who sold him the box. As suggested reseat the heatsink. Compusa sells some thermal paste for some $, but it'll work. Becareful removing the heatsink, as arctic silver 5 is applied to it and you have to twist the heatsink off to loosen it and then remove it otherwise you run the risk of pulling it out of the socket and breaking it.

I suggest reseating the heatsink also checking your install disc and from there it should be fine.
 
Heh. I've got a packet of the white goo tha tcomes with shuttles I can send you. PM me your address and I'll send it down.

First thing you can do though is to just try to reseat it. There may be enough left on there. It may have just shifted a little bit during shipment.

Also, just humor me and try setting your VDIMM to 2.7V.
 
Failsafe temp in bios? ...or maybe you got a damaged PSU? What are the bios rails?
 
53 is on the high side considering its a .09nm/939 but i wouldnt worry about it.

best bet is to reseat your heatsink w/ properly applied as5. let smartfan take care of cooling your CPU until XPC tools are released.

i mean, my 754 .13nm 2800+ runs at 47 idle.
