Help getting Mac Farm working

Alrighty, I'm going to ask a kinda stupid question, but I always tell my students it "never hurts to ask".

I setup a small farm, but none of those machines seem to be doing anything?

2X PPC Tiger iMac's, not the fastest, but they rarely get used for anything so they should be folding almost nonstop. These are mainly used for a class that is run once a year, and only for a few weeks during that class, and when I have an undergrad in the lab (dont' right now, and don't plan too for a bit).

1X Intel iMac running 10.6.3 that is not used much, mainly as a 2nd box sitting next to my

1x Intel MacBook running 10.6.3 that gets used nonstop, but only for 10-12 hours a day (gotta love grad school!).

Combined with my C2Q 6850 at home which also runs a GTX260.


Problem is, I started the Mac's yesterday, but they haven't done a single WU from what I can tell, and the C2Q at home has finished a few, but mainly the GTX260 has done a most of what was done yesterday. This seems to me that I don't quite have this setup right.

The Older PPC iMac's are running the PPC client (5.02 I think), both Snow Leopard Mac's are running 6.29.3, and the C2Q is running 6.23 and GPU2.

Any tips, or point me in the right way. Btw, I don't want the C2Q running full blast, 24/7 because the case it's built in, is built for silence, and is not the best cooling, but I should be able to run it at ~50-75% without any heat issues. (And without making it loud enough to be audible)
 
I don't speak mac, but for your quad, when you did the setup, if you go through the adv options part you could set the CPU usage to whatever % you want

not sure if you can run install again, but I would think that's your best bet if you don't want 100%

I think PowerPC support has gone the way of the dodo. There are clients here, and you can try use them to get work, but if you don't, then don't be surprised.

As for the Intel Macs, can you go through what you did for the install?
 
Ummm, downloaded the client off the F@H site, installed it, set user name to Zumino_Zufeilon, team to 33, and hit "enable Folding@Home" (This was all done in system preferences)
 
I just finished setting up my iMac, so I feel your pain. With my machine (Core2Duo, running 10.5.8), I reinstalled about ten times, using every client version that I could find. I even set up a vm using VMWare Fusion and notfred's vm appliance. But, no matter what I did, that machine would never download a WU. I read about the WU shortage and figured that was the case, but my other machines were still able to get WUs during the same time frame.

In the end, the fix was very easy. Install the latest version of the mac client for your machine, then go into the preference pane and click on the Advanced tab. In the arguments box, put -advmethods in the arguments box and then restart the client. After doing that, I got a WU (a3 core) on my very next attempt.
 
Is there a passkey or something I should be using? (not related, just not sure)

Tried the -advmethods trick, will have to see if it works
 
you could either downclock the laptop to eliminate some heat, or (im not too familiar with the mac client) indicate your 'desired CPU usage' as less then 100%- run the program with a -configonly flag or otherwise enter the setup dialogue again and set it differently. you might need to select yes when it asks if you would like to configure advanced options.

i have heard that many people have had trouble with the CPU-utilization scaling feature, atleast on the PC clients, in regards that it doesnt do a good job of running at the desired CPU utilization percentage.
 
Well, thanks for all the help.

Installed the SMP client on the desktop at home (The QX6850) not real happy with the performance though, not sure why but it seems like it should be going faster.

The GPU is doing ok though, and both Snow Leopard macs are running so I guess I'm happy.

 
just to make sure- you need to sign up for a passkey on stamfords website. this will enable you to get the bonuses that are available when running SMP clients. also, the first 10 work units you do after entering your passkey initially do not recieve bonuses, only #11 and up. after you have more then 10 WUs on your passkey, you will from then on get all the points you deserve.
 
Just a small tidbit of information if it hasnt been stated, cause I only read the first post.....

PPC processors on iMacs are no longer supported and had SUCH A HORRIBLE completion time on WU's that they are completely useless for folding. Standford stats that you must have a Intel based iMac.
