I recently received an new western digital 250gb HD from my Western Digital RMA. This was to be my vista drive and I am having tons of problems.

1. I installed vista and could only get it to boot after the restart if the DVD was in.
2. With the DVD removed, I could not boot and got a disk boot failure
3. I booted into XP and was able to delete the partiton vista setup
4. I was able to reinstall vista after deleting the partition in XP
5. Now i still cant boot into vista and all i get is a disk read error

What is the problem? Should I send back my RMA drive for another one?

I have this problem every now an then with my 250GB SATA drive. Vista would blue screen and the computer would restart and give me a DISK READ FAILURE message. Found out the problem is my SATA cable. The vibrations form the drive works it just loose enough to cause problems. I just have to push it back on and it's good for a while.

But I'd suggest that you run WD's diagnostic software on the drive to check for problems.

sounds good, I will report back soon with my results

Should I be considering a RMA, need to know so i can call today

Ok, I am my wits endI am on my second rma drive and i still get disk read errors after my vista install. I went to install linux on the same drive and it froze mid way during install. Xp sees the drive fine though. To make sure it wasnt the drive, i connected a 160gb WD drive that had a previously working install on it and when i changed the boot order in the bios, I got another freaking disk read error, press ctrl+alt+delete to restart.

Any ideas? Should I flash my bios to a newer version? Are the 3 SATA ports I am not using (and have tried ) not working? What should I do?

Well, if a known working drive fails along with the new drive, then I'd have to think that your SATA controller has gone bad, OR you have some bad memory.
