Help choosing Audio Setup (Speakers/Amp)

I need some help in choosing an audio setup for my HTPC. I do not know much about amps and speakers therefore I would like some recommendations Priority wise, it would be movies first, followed by music, and then games. Im looking for a 5.1 or 7.1 setup.

I would like to know would it be better to buy 5.1 computer speakers, or would it be better to buy an amplifier with speakers and connect it to the digital out of the sound card? Budget would be around $400-$500.

What would sound better?
