HELP!!!! chkdsk killed my data.

OK. I ran chkdisk on a drive via the windows XP option to fix the errors on a disk before sart-up. I rebooted the machine, and when I returned to it, 40gb was missing, including my documents (poetry, fiction, classwork, resumes, ALL OF MY PICTURES, etc.)

What as left was a hidden folder called 'found.0000' or something with about 2.7gb worth of random files in it.

Is there any way to get my files back? A recovery tool perhaps? I left the disk idle-- no defrag, no nothing. I'm hoping the old data is there, but made inaccessible since the space is freed up.

Is there any tool (cost not an issue) that could help me get that data back? Or did chkdsk really fry all those memories for good? If it did-- WHY?

Odds are that there was another cause of corruption to your file system, and chkdsk was led down the wrong path. Grab a copy of the Ultimate Boot CD and see if it has some tools to help you get your data back.

Go back to stock frequencies, run MemTest86, then see about conducting a recovery.
 
Forgive the signature-- the machine was at stock frequency when it happened. While I'll def try the tool you sent me, I'm wondering if anyone knows what actually happened to the date-- is it likely to be there, under hte surface?

WINDOWS System Resore is on hte drive and it's supposed ot hold up to 28gb-- can I use that to my advantage?
