so i was sitting at my computer last night chatting away, and all of a sudden it restarts. i don't think much of it and let it boot back up..problem is it gets to the windows loading screen, you know, the one that says Windows XP Pro and the little bar under it going from left to right, it gets past that and acts like it is about to give me the screen where i enter my password to log into windows, but it just goes to a black screen and restarts again.

it does the same thing in safe mode, debugging mode, and every other mode. it gets past the loading part and is about to give me my password prompt and just restarts.

i figured i needed to check the system reboot on system failure or whatever it is and make sure it was on, but i can't even get to windows to do that.

when i loaded up another harddrive, it went fine, and i also loaded up my harddrive as a slave on the other harddrive and i was able to get to my files.

so i figure i have some kind of virus or something that changed my boot settings to restart, has anyone else had this problem? what do i do?

please and thanks.

EDIT: System specs in sig.

Well we can rule out heat unless that drive has been abused. Virus scan the entire HD if you think it's a virus. . . backup whatever you can AFTER you virusscan. Reinstall Xp.

is there no way i can just some how get the original boot info or something since if it was a virus or whatever it was messed with the boot info to make it restart on its own..is there no way i can get it back to default?

anyone? im at work and id like to try to fix it when i get home..anyone have any ideas?

Yeah, pop in your XP cd, go into the recovery console and type FIXBOOT

You may also want to test your HD with the manufacturers utility just to make sure it is not damaged.

Similarly, run memtest86 to make sure your ram isn't toast.

Definitely run a virus scan on that drive.

You may have a failing PS in your box. Swapping it out to test that possibility wouldn't hurt.

Good luck

I can see your reply now, "But it was fine for a long time!" but I'm still going to suggest popping in another power supply. Unplug all of your CDROMS, case fans, and anything else that will draw power other than your primary HDD and see if it will boot okay. However, even if it doesn't, and you haven't tried a swap, it might be going bad.

Go to a friend's and say, "Hey, I'm taking your power supply." Punch him in the face and take it anyway if he says no. Swap it with yours. If it works, my suggestion would be to keep the PS. Ownership is 9/10ths of the law I hear. Computers are more important than friends.
