i've tried so hard to figure out how to fix this, i don't know where else to look. i have a gigabyte GA-M55SLI S4 rev 2.0 motherboard with the Realtek ALC850 Audio Codec. Recently, i had to reinstall Vista, and since then, i am having audio problems. When plugged into the back audio port, the speakers will provide a VERY low volume sound, with the volume cranked up all the way on the speakers, and the settings in my sound manager as well. if i plug the speakers into the front panel audio port, it works fine. the front port audio connectors are connected with the HD audio plug. nothing has changed from before i reinstalled, and it used to work fine. i've installed the latest signed drivers, i even tried the unsigned beta drivers, neither fixed the problem. i really have no idea what to do. anybody have any ideas on how to try and fix this?

When you say you have the volume all the way up in the sound manager do you mean the realtek manager or the vista manager? Both will control the sound so you need to turn it up in both of them.

yea, turned it all the way up in both of them.

now, after unplugging and plugging back in the front panel audio headers, i have no sound whatsoever, from the back panel and the front. i have no idea. i guess it must be hardware failure, but there are no errors in vista at all. i guess i'm fucked.

ok, i fixed it. i plugged the ac97 header instead of the hd audio into the front panel connectors on the motherboard and now everything works. it's wierd, though, because some of the things i saw in my searches said that ac97 front panel connectors actually cause this problem. plus, i had the hd audio plugged in before and had no problems, but at least it's working now.
