Hey all,
So i have a rebel XTi, and id like to take more, close up insect type photos, im limited with the lens i have now, something like 18-55, It seems they cant focus, even when i manual focus it, they are fuzzy when it comes to taking pictures of insects.

Id like to pay around 100 bucks, i dont care wether its that price used or new, and take good quality pics of insects such as a reference point of ladybugs. By good quality, i mean, not shitty lens, but not like OMGBBQWTF amazing macro.

Thanks all

You probably ought to look at getting a reversing ring or some lens tubes to decrease the minimum focusing distance of your lens. You can also try some of the magnification filters.

Keep in mind that at macro distances, any slight movement will cause motion blur in your pictures. You need to be on a tripod or maintain a decent shutter speed (in other words, you'll need a good amount of light). Depth of field is also typically pretty narrow at macro distances.

You might be able to pick up a used Sigma zoom lens that has a macro feature at that price point, but those lenses are not very good and aren't true macro.

I saw a deal for a Quantaray 70-300 mm at 50 bucks on craigslist, would this aid me in shooting macro? Its said to only have been used twice, if it is in good condition, would this be alright for shooting insects, the sample pictures seem to, butid like "pro" advice :), thanks

The problem with a reversing ring is you have to manually close the aperture.

You're not going to get very far with $100 - definitely not "OMGBBQ". Kick in another $70 and you could get a set of Kenko tubes to use with your kit lens: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/375102-REG/Kenko_AEXTUBEDGC_Auto_Extension_Tube_Set.html You might be able to find them used on eBay or KEH.

Another option would be to get a diopter: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/391219-REG/Hoya_XD58CUP3_58_mm_3_Close_Up.html

You have two problems. You are using one of the worst lenses ever made by Canon. Your budget doesn't allow you to get a lens better than what you have. The only option, lens wise, is the 50mm f/1.8. Razor thin DOF for macro-esque shots. The only problem is that you'd have to shove the camera almost right up to the subject, and insects tend to fly away.

Do yourself a favor. Save your money until you can buy the Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro. Please.

edit: here's what you're looking at for a used copy: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=7916785&postcount=1
