I just found this thread and want to chime in as I see that OP is no hold for now so I am not too late

not sure about the case but you can check out refurbished servers from TAM solutions.
they sell the full server setup for like $300 and the case looks just like the one you selected.
in fact it is "Supermicro SC846 " model.
the hardware is not new, but it came in clean and fully working
it is not 100% comaprtible with ESXi for PCI passthough so if that is a MUST you will need to go with Xen 4.2 (yes I can confirm that a pci pass though works on ubuntu 12.04 and xen 4.2 setup)
Esxi and xenserver do not work on this hardware but for the price you can swap the internals easy.
maybe sell it on ebay or something a get back $100 or so
that is unless you are a stickler for new stuff vs old. I mean your case alone will cost like a grand or so.
I got server for my new build from them last month for $349+ shipping they had a sale for quadcores $319+$86 ship
swap the CPU for a pair of AMD Opteron Hex Core 2431 @ 2.4Ghz for total of 12 cores (ebay)
and added 48Gb of RAM (don't ask just found a couple of deals on ebay and the common sense went out of the window)
my total cost for the server and mods came just under $900

Procs: AMD Opteron Quad Core 2346HE @ 1.8GHz
Ram: 8 GB using 4x2GB
IPMI Card: Kira 100
3 SAT2-MV8 PCI-X Raid cards
2 Ablecom PWS-902-IR Redundant PSU
Network : 2 on-board Gigabit ports

Hello all,
Just wanted to update this, we still got around 3 more months before moving to the new house so i'm not building my server yet >.<
however until then I have a question~ my 24TB is becoming full and I'm in need to expand! XD
right now my RAID card only support 8 HDDs and I already got HP SAS Expander but haven't used it yet.
The case I'm using can't support anymore HDDs so I'm thinking of getting a new case and connect it to the main case via SAS external cable as a temporary solution until we finally move out.
The question is, if I'm to do that, shouldn't both PCs be powered on in the same time? If yes, is there a way to insure that both operate together? (like a shared power cable of some sort?)
also, what would happen if for some reason the 2nd pc shuts down by accident? (I'm planning to make a new RAID configuration so pc 1 will have RAID6 8HDDs, pc 2 will be RAID1 2HDDs for now)
PC 2 will only be a power source and holder for the new HDDs only.

So finally we started having some progress (small progress) but better than nothing!
just to recap before posting the pics let me recap on the situation, we've wired the whole villa with 1GB/s ethernet cables. 3 Floors in total.
- ground floor having 16 cables
- 1st floor having 20 cables
- 2nd floor having 13 cables
now, in my city, the municipality requires a patch panel to be accessible to the phone company in the ground floor (which was one problem for me), so now every cable from all 3 floors will go through that patch panel, then they will be diverted again back up to the main server room (where I will have my main server+switches, etc..)
now, here is a picture of all the cables going through the patch panel box:
and this is it after patching and wiring:
Finally, in the main server room, additional cables are added, (security cameras, futures cables and wifi spots). it looks SCARY but hopefully will get organized once I get the server rack and start organizing!
Finally, the paint job is still not done so once everything is done I'll be sure to post it here

What model is that rack? Have you decided on a video card?
