I just ordered another XTPE from CDW since I dont believe Gateway will ever ship. The CDW rep informed me that they have over 600 on back order but are expecting an order in access of that on July 6th. She went on to say they are recieving enough to fill the backorders and will still have some stock. I have dealt with them in the past and they have been credible.

I hope ATI can deliver to CDW on their date.

Despite my inner child/geek really wanting to buy EITHER the Radeon x800 XTPE or the GeForce 6800 Ultra RIGHT FREAKIN NOW, I for one am holding back on my purchase for at least a month. Why preorder? I'll just buy later this summer, say mid-August, after the official Doom 3 benchmarks are out and after the prices have a small opportunity to stabilize.

I was a longtime Nvidia user, entering the market as a TNT user, and only recently bought an ATi card. I claim no firm allegiance to either brand. It makes no sense. Now, Nvidia's behavior in the past year and a half has been a little 'unsavory', but if they're selling the REAL best performing card, then that's where the money goes. If ATi can retain the performance crown, then it is they who shall have my dollar.

I'm curious however - the news a few weeks ago was that the X800 XT beat the 6800U by a real, albeit small margin. Now, it seems like everywhere you turn, one sees the 6800U besting the x800 XT. What's the story? What changed?

It's the new drivers. The old ones that the original reviews were based on used very early drivers, no where near as optomized as they could be. I'm nor Nvidiot, but right now i'd probably get a 6800 Ulta over an XTPE, but mind you if you asked me that a few weeks ago i would have said XTPE.

Well for me its more critical since I sold my 9800xt already. I am running on a matrox g450 right now so gaming is out of the question. I am on vacation next week and would like to enjoy a little gaming.

Since both cards provide more than enough performance, I chose the PE because of the price. In 6 months I will buy again like I always do.

That is a good point - ATI does have Nvidia beat when it comes to pricing and availability - regardless of which card performs better. At just under $450 if you shop around, the 'value' is really with the x800XTPE.... especially considering the 6800Us are at least $500+ at the moment... perhaps if they don't sell very well, Nvidia will start a pricing battle that will drive these prices down to where they should be.

I am going with the 6800 Ultra preorder from Bestbuy for $499.99. I WILL NOT pay over the MSRP for a video card even if I have to wait a bit.

I won't be building a new system for until about a year and a half from now so this setup will have to last until then.

Christ man - you've already got an x800 pro and you're already moving up to a 6800U?!?!?

yea i have an XP 2800+, and ill i do is game, im still debating when to upgrade my cpu/mobo and add more ram, i guess ill have to wait until D3 and see the benchmarks
