Heavy Servers

What do you guys do about heavy DC equipment? I'm worried about the liability of people getting hurt moving these servers around (and lifting them up), some of these can weigh a couple hundred pounds and we'll have to get them 5 to 6 feet in the air...
 
We have a lift at work. It has a crank on it. That takes care of the problem.

Usually we'll rack anything 2U or smaller by hand, 4U if it's going in the middle of a rack & 2 guys are available. For larger stuff or awkward lifts we use the lift.
 
What lift do you have? What have you done when you have to lift a heavier object up high?

I've been looking at the lifts on serverlift.com, ever heard of them? They seem to go high enough with risk of tipping.
 
Usually for servers that were 2U, I would either just very carefully lift them on my own, or I would have to use the Buddy System. Lifts were not a luxury my company wanted to spend money on unfortunately...

There were a few occasions when I was installing SAN Arrays where I would install the chassis into the cabinet with another person (unless they were in the way, and then I'd just hulk it into place), and then I'd load up the drives once the chassis was secured.

To alleviate heavy stuff going up high, I generally would try to plan a cabinet so that I wouldn't have anything over 2U higher than about halfway up or so if possible. There were a few emergency situations (Data Center Provider was threatening to shut our cabinets down O__o) where reorganization was required and I had no other choice than to put 2U servers up toward the top of the cabinet. Those got scary, but it had to be done.

Rail training is actually probably a great idea as well. Knowing how the rails work is a great way to minimize the time the server is in the air in someone's hands.

My department was unfortunately viewed as a necessary "evil" (they probably would have done away with us completely if they could have), so unless the hardware was deemed necessary for growth, we were severely under resourced and severely under staffed, to the point where I was running the department alone for a couple months. We didn't have the luxury of a lift, so it was the buddy system or nothing. Before I left the company, I almost, ALMOST, got them to approve a workbench so that we could stop using the floor/desks as a workspace, but they denied it.... Sorry, I'll stop ranting now.

TL;DR: 1U is usually easy enough for one person, Buddy system is great for 2U, anything bigger, I recommend put it lower and a lift would definitely help, and know your rails.
