im going to be building a new rig sometime soon, and i figured i might as well as you guys what the best heatsinks out are.

i wanna stay on air, and keep the noise level reasonable, so i'll most likely stick with panaflos. ive planned out two rigs, one amd, one intel. im thinking about the amd one since it is cheaper.

athlon 2500+ barton
p4c 2.4

also, quick question, is the multi completely locked out on the new bartons, or just up to like 12.5 or something?

Get a mobile chip, they are unlocked. The best heatsink is a Thermalright SP-97 with a high cfm fan.

Themalright and Swiftech make the best heatsinks. They are expensive but worth it if you want maximum aircooling efficiency.

The barton 2500+'s are locked. The mobile 2500+'s are not.

Depending on what your going to do with the system, if you want the highest performance machine out of the two i would opt for a 2.8c rig. The 2.8c isn't much more then a 2.4c.

A 3.0c at stock beats a 2500+ mobile at 2.4Ghz in most all benches even gaming. Pentium 4's are very overclockable and you should be able to get 3.4Ghz or higher out of a 2.8c no problem. I like Intel motherboards more also. More stable chipsets.

If your on a tight budget though i would go for the 2500+ mobile and an Asus, Abit, or DFI motherboard.

Athlon Plan:

2 Raptors = 243
Barton 2500+ = 80
ABIT AN7 = 109
XMS 1GB(512MBx2) PC-3700 = 273

Total = 705

P4 Plan:

2 Raptors = 243
2.4C = 164
ABIT IC7-MAX3 = 187
XMS 1GB(512MBx2) PC-3700 = 273

Total = 867

if i get the athlon, even if i cant change the multi, the fsb is going to be high as hell anyway, 233 on the ram and i can oc that up to 250 and get 2.75. even at stock its already 2.56

on the other hand the max3 has 6 sata ports and the gigahertz fsb. i know it would work better too, but i dont know if its worth the extra 150 bucks. two more HDs have to come into it as well. i might as well just get the p4 though. all my freind think that amds are kick so much ass, and that getting a p4 is a waste of time. well HAHA, *slap* my p4 just made your amd cry. lol. no flame wars, it just my freinds are morons.

I got a Thermalright SLK-948U for my P4, with a 92mm panaflo Ultra. 43dba / 69cfm. Pretty silent and effective.

Those Ultra by panaflo are hard to find as most place carry the Low/Medium/High but no Ultra.

I know someone in the FS/FT forum is selling some for 5$ each + 3$ shipping. It's a steal for the quality of fan you get.

For overclocking, I'd go with the SLK947U/SLK948U with a 92mm Panaflo High (56cfm, 35dBA... very livable).

if you get the sp-94 dont get a tornado

I reccomend highly agaisnt it... like i said many times before even on my fanbus I cringe when i turn my pc on.

At very low RPM's it whines and anything over 1/4 is insainly loud. Im thinking about getting a Mach1 system because this is beginning to annoy me.
