my bro and I have the same athlon64 socket 754,and only difference is he has thermaltake heatsink and i have standard that came with retail cpu,his temp for cpu is 79F,and mine is 108,both temps at idle,plus im guessing the copper on the thermaltake is also better,i jus didnt think there would be such a big difference,so u think thats it?sorry had to ask,bothered me.we both have good case cooling etc..thx n advance.


and as far as applying the thermal paste i did like artic cooling site said,little on heatsink rub into with plastic bag as to fill micro valleys etc,wipe off,apply rice grain n a half on cpu then secured heatsink.
 
It could be one or a few of several things:
a) Your room temperature is higher than his, therfore your blowing hot air into your computer which obviously can screw up your temps, so open a window or something
b) you might have put too much thermal paste, it sounds like you did it right, but i dont know, too much thermal paste can mess up your heat transfer
c) make sure your heatsink is tightened properly, and that the weight is evenly distributed.
d) If you have one of those temperature gagues stuck on top of your cpu in b/w the hsf, then take it out and put it in btween the copper grooves ( i did that and it brought my temps down almost 20 degrees f)
e) it could just be that you need a new heatsink. Naturally a storebought( or internet) heatsink will be better than a stock one. Thermal take is specialized in cooling, its their job. Amd however is jsut giving you a special thanks for buyign their cpu.

I think it's e. Thers nothing wrong withyour heatsink, its jsut that thermaltake is way better than any stock amd heatsink.
 
Do you have the same motherboard as well as CPU? The method of temperature reading in current desktops is NO exact science.

Even if you have the same mobo and assume your sensors are fairly parallel, there are tons of variables involved. The heatsink plays at least a small part. If your CPU is stable you can ignore it. If you'd like to cool it down you can lap your heatsink, reapply, get a better fan, get a new heatsink, etc etc, as you wish.

Two more things: Do you have Cool n' Quiet enabled?
Also: you're saying his CPU temp is 26 degrees Celsius.... You and he should make sure thats the correct temp. If any other temps are reporting higher, his temps could be mislabeled. Also it should change dramatically going from idle to load, no matter how good his cooling is.
 
i have gone to amd.com and download the windows a64 driver thats suppose to regulate the volts cpu speed etc...other than that not sure what ur referring to as cool n quiet please elaborate,and our motherboards are different he has gigabyte and i have chaintech,again guys thanx for any info,i love this site so much,everyones so HELPFUL,peace
 
Well with different motherboards, CPU temps can't quite be exactly compared. They're really only useful for reference relative to themselves.

But they will give a general idea. Installing the AMD driver was good, but Cool n' Quiet has to be enabled in your motherboards BIOS as well. If he has cool 'n quiet on, and you don't, that would explain a lot of the difference.
