heatercore questions

im trying to watercool on a budget (175, with cpu and vga blocks)
and i have noticed that using a heatercore is a lot cheaper than a black ice Rad, as they are obscenely expensive

however, the only heatercores i've seen are the classic 77 bonneville, which is a dual-12omm size
im looking for a heatercore thats REALLY cheap pretty good, and sized for a single 120mm fan...

suggestions?
 
Chevette heater core, not sure of the year, go to your autoparts store some odd time when they are not busy and tell them you need a heater core for your computer. It usually freaks them out and they get curious. ask to see their catalouge, it will have the basic dimensions and show a sketch. The guys at autozone were happy to let me look to find just the one I needed which unfortunately for you is a dual 120mm fan one.

The heater core from an ’86 Chevette is what you should get. It has good performance, low pressure drop, and is priced around 20 dollars in an auto parts store. It has one 5/8” barb, and one ¾” barb, so you have to change them out, or stretch your tubing over it. The ¾” one will be tough to stretch your tubing over.

by the way, whats the most cost effective way to buy other parts of a CPU-GPU WC system with a small workable ares, and a $75 credit at frozencpu (i.e., whats the best bang for the buck there, so i can get as much as i can on credit)
 
$75 might not get you everything you want from FrozenCPU, but if I had to venture a guess, I'd say go with Swiftech MCW6000 for cpu and MCW20 for gpu. Otherwise, I'd say go 1/2" ID (purely personal preference), and grab a good cpu block and save up for a gpu block later. I don't think you could grab both a pump and blocks for $75, though, but you could probably search some fish forums for a decent starter pump for not too much. Alternately, you could look around on here for some good $50-$80 pump recommendations. Take it with a grain of salt, we're all talking out of our arses here ; ) Also, you should decide whether you want a reservoir or not, because that's another couple of bucks to consider, and there are loads of choices, most aren't *much* better than others, so you can always do nicely with the tried-and-true homemade plastic bin model.
 
If you end up getting that heatercore, for a couple bucks at Lowe's you can get 1/2" barbs and it's simple enough to cut off the old ones and solder on new barbs...took me like 20 minutes for the whole thing. Just make sure you leak test the soldered barbs.
 
Hey Stumpy what did you use to solder them on? I've seen a few torches around $25 and was thinking of getting one to do that.
 
how much room do you have for mounting the core? as a default position, more surface area with cores is the way to go (bigger is better) provided that you have the room and a fan to get air through it.

measure the mounting location and give me the dimensions and I can likely find a core that will be somewhere between the '86 chevette and the '77 b'villes.

since it is mentioned above -- why solder the fittings on? first, if you use the right solder, it will be stronger than the JB Weld/Epoxy type methods (i.e. the silver solder I use is rated for 15,000 PSI joint strength - the metal in the tank would probably give before the solder would). Also, by soldering (or more accurately 'sweating') the fittings allows for very little mess - once the fittings are in place, there are no globs of sealant sticking out. errrr...you get to use the torch in the process (pyromaniacs anonymous never worked for me ;) )
 
i think tou misunderstood
the whole system doesnt have to be 75 at frozencpu
i just want to know what parts i should use the 75 on, to get the most value out of it,
and 3/8ID would be better, as space is at a premium
 
Thanks for clearing that up, it looks like the two I listed are the best choices for a 3/8" ID system on a budget (I thinkt hey would come to around $80 together). Do ask around about that CPU block, though, I don't know if it's a good performer.
