heat problem..or cd

hi,
recently one of my friends gave me the game enter the matrix
and we installed the first disc ,but when we where installing the second disc it was not
reading,we waited for some time but it was not still reading when i ejected the disc i found
a horrible shock of my life the second disc was into bits...broken!,i don't know how this
happened but i know that his cd was not a original one and was of low quality,but i have a doubt to ask is this due to the cd's quality or due to my p4's heat,one more thing..i haven't
overclocked my pc so is this my problem or his..

I think it was due to the low quality of the disk but if you can tell us a temperature that your case runs at usually im sure you can get a better more definitive answer.

How fast is the drive the disc was in?

Way back in the early days of highspeed drives when they were shooting for over 60x
some discs, cheap ones especially flew apart destroying the disc and usually the drive itself.

don't know if this was the case, but it came to memory reading the post.

i would think that a cd would shatter more easily if it was cold.. the hotter it gets, the more malleable it is, and less likely to shatter... anyways... high speed drives can cause a cd to shatter... 50x+ i think is where it starts to happen..

anyways... this happened to someone on here about a week ago... they posted pics and everything

my temp was some 50+ and my cdrom's speed is 52x

this usually happens when you have a crack in the middle of the cd (where the hole is)

at 52X, the centrifugal force will rip the cd apart if there's a crack.. even older ASUS cdrom manuals state that user shouldn't use the CD if there's a crack...

i've heard of one case that the shattered CD actually punctured the front part of the tray!

also in the net there is a research done by some students.. the stuck a cd on a dremel and run it at 10k rpm (about 52X). then he uses another cd to touch the spinning cd. the spinning cd just shattered an through his comment, a shattered piece stuck into his room's door!
