how can u tell when there has been heat damage to your hardrive. i put my whole computer in a storage space this summer and im afraid that there may have been heat damage to my hardrive or data. this summer, it reached temperatures of over 30 degrees celcius (86f). i know 30 is not really that hot, but it may have gotten beyond that in the storage place because it was upstairs.
 
usually drives start getting damanged at around 50 C when operational and 70 C when turned off.

what is the damage? bad sectors? or is the drive just dead? as in dead dead dead.
 
i really doubt that there was any damage from heat like that. At most it probably got to around 120 degrees which isn't enough to damage it. It sounds like you haven't even turned the computer on yet, so unless you can see the plastic on the hard drive melting just turn it on and see if it works.
 
there isnt any huge difference. i just noticed some videos werent playing right and wondering whether it has anything to do with the heat. also, i had put another hard drive in a storage place a few years back and it completely stopped working. i wanted to know what signs to look for in case i have to back up all my stuff on another drive if this one stops working
