Actually they've been up for a few days now, but noone bothered to mention:

http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/...LINUXdriver&submit.x=11&submit.y=8&submit=GO!

Supports Desktop Radeon 8500 up to the X800 (7500 and below are out of luck) Mobility Radeon 9000/9200/9600 (Looks like mobility Radeon 9700/9800 are out of luck) and FireGL 8700 and up (older cards are out of luck) AIW will work the same as the regular card but without the video functions.

correct me if i'm wrong but aren't ati linux drivers supposed to be how can i phrase this....t3h cr4p><o0rz!!!!11

unless these are any better. but if there good then that means more competition on a different OS between ati and nvidia.

Yeah, ATi has always had poopey linux support but i've heard they are getting better. If you run linux and want some good gaming you should go nVidia.

Yeah, the linux drivers aren't exactly top notch speed. Haven't tried this set, but I don't expect much difference. If its any consolation, they are rock solid-stable (probably more to do with the OS platform than the drivers themselves) and no visual artifacts. Nothing to really heavily complain about.

Nvidias are better for speed, but still well below their potential.

IE: Its hard to complain about ATI and linux drivers when Intel looks like this in D3D (you can forget about linux completely):

We aren’t discussing Intel's drivers, and D3D isn’t available on Linux. So no, it’s not hard to complain about ATi's Linux support.

The ATI linux drivers are a shame, Its such a joke, and even when you get it working even though ut2004 and what not work but even with 60 fps it still feels very very nasty. Dont even bother with ATI accelerated drivers in linux unless you want an opengl screensaver or some variant, otherwise for games they are useless. Nvidia is the only way to go for gaming in linux.

Well, you could also say that UT2004 and many other games do not officially support Linux. The biggest seller of videocards (intel) does not support 3D linux on most of its platforms. Never tried UT2004 in Linux, but how can it be bad if its at 60fps? Has creative gotten around to linux support yet (5.1 surround, or even stereo) or is it just using a generic sound driver? I would think a generic sound or ethernet driver might be half of the problem (eating CPU cycles like crazy)

Most people use 3D in linux for CAD/CAE, so precision and accuracy are more important than raw speed.

i guess i shouldn't really make comments like i did considering i don't use a linux bistro, and don't really intend to anytime soon. however i only said what i said from reviewer sites, which did show the nvidia linux drivers having a big upper-hand

^exactly. most of you slamming ATI's linux support are either uninformed because you've never used Linux, or your spouting off some bs you read somewhere else.

however judging from the responses it seems to be that ati need to work a little more on their linux drivers

ATI does need better Linux drivers. ET is almost unplayable for me under linux. I get all kinds of artifacting, which eventually leads to crashing out X. UT2K3 is playable, but it just doesnt "feel" right. Even some of the games usually included with Linux crash, tuxracer comes to mind. I have always used NVidia till I got my 9800pro, and NVidias drivers were perfect. Much easier to install, and ALWAYS worked perfect for me. Needless to say, my next card will be Nvidia based. I'm gonna try these new ones out tonight, I'll report back what I find.

I'm slamming them because I know what the fuck im talking about. My favorite distro is Gentoo. ATI is slow as shit in linux my 9800 pro was actually slower than my nvidia ti4200. If you would like to know how bad they are go to
http://forums.gentoo.org and just read around on peoples views of the ATI cards in linux. Also I can't explain why, but at 60 fps it just didnt look right and that was also with the quality set to low. ATI sucks in linux, if you need acceleration for games dont bother, otherwise game with a nvidia in linux. And a lil talk about the new drivers from people who actually use linux.http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=207327&highlight=ati

ATI's Linux drivers are Crap. OpenGL and Linux is definitely not ATI's strongest points.

ATI has good hardware but their driver teams are rather sad. If you take a look at their performance boosts from release to release you can see there are minimal at best performance gains. They mainly just address some of the many in-game bugs they are plagued with.

I've seen FX 5200's schooling 9800 Pro's in different Linux distro's.

exactly, ati is windows only unless you like slideshow games

The new drivers are actually pretty good. Tuxracer no longer crashes, and ET runs at abould half the speed it does in WinXP, although it looks better in Windows. I'd say my 9800pro is equal to my old TI4200 in Linux now :D

Seems ATI didnt change much with this driver release.
  • fglrx RPM files are now conflicting with older fglrx-glc22 as orginally intended.
  • fglrx kernel module is now compiling properly on 2.6.6 and later kernels
  • The color palette now remains intact when switching VT terminals
  • Running a 3D app after and DGA apps no longer hangs the system
  • Enabling Quad-Buffer stereo on FireGL X1/Z1 no longer results in desktop corruption

:(

I recently switched from a Ti4200 to a 9800pro. The 4200 was using nVidia drivers 5536 (I think) and the 9800 has 3.9.xx. Needless to say, the 4200 blew the 9800 away completely.

It's a sad state of affairs when I had to lower the resolution on the 9800 to get ET to play decently. I have yet to try the new 3.11 drivers. Probably won't even bother until the Doom3 binaries are available.
