Ok.. I've already got a pair of sennheiser HD497's and absolutely love them. I am, however, looking for a suggestion for some "workout" friendly cans.. Partially because of the leatherish/vinylish/rubberish pads getting all sweaty, and due to the fact that they've got a 10 foot cable, that even though I tie it up, tends to bounce around.. lastly, I can't hear much outside the headphones [i.e. they have too much capability in drowning out background sounds.

So..

What I need are headphones that preferably just have foam removable/washable pads.
has some sort of retractable cord would be really nice
are "open air" so that I can hear cars driving up behind me while I"m jogging
aren't massive like the 497s or grado's, etc..
and aren't ear-buds.

I want an "over the head" or "behind the neck" looping setup, etc.


koss has a cheapy "ear-clipon" setup
Koss KSC-55 for only $20.00 !

but I don't know how good they are, etc.. [at $20 i guess they are worth trying, however] but basically i'm looking for a suggestion...

Not looking for $200 solution, either .. like I said, my senn HD497s are fantastic as far as I'm concerned, but I don't want to ruin them with my "excercise by products"

Oh.. and they are getting plugged into a portable - either my zen xtra 40gb or the new sandisk memory key/voice recorder 512mb that I got that's also an mp3 player
 
The Sennhieser PX100s might fit the bill quite well. About 40 bucks on newegg.

He said he wants open headphones so he can hear cars driving up behind him. It is to my understanding that canal phones tend to isolate better than regular closed cans. This is the opposite of what he wants.

Any of the Koss KSC-35,50,55,75 will work for you. Just pick your style, they all use the same driver. :)

But, I mean, are they a decent headphone ? I am sure the sennheisers are better, but, are they "good enough"?
 
exactly how high sound quality is necessary for working out? i've got hd600's for my pc listening but my workout phones are just some old beat up sony behind-the-neck and they do the job fine.
 
Personally, I think you are going down a dead end road. Why no "ear-buds"? Personally, I would not to work out any pair of headphones including the behind the ear style frames. For pure sound quality, anything that is going to be light enough to be usable would be inferior to a good pair of ear canals. Besides they will be easier to clean (no foam).

If isolation is an issue they make non-isolated models.

It's funny you should say dead end road.

My concern is that I can't hear cars on the road, thus making it likely that I will end up dead.

I think I also said I don't want a $200 solution.

My senn's cost me $50.
I'[m not going to buy $150 to $350 earbuds.

Lastly, and most importantly, I don't want something sticking in my ear the entire time.. Which was one of the things I said "no earbuds" -- by that I mean no buds, no canals..

I've decided to try the koss option.. They are cheap, and if they are crap, I didn't spend too much to just ya know, give them to my girlfriend who can't tell the difference anyhow.

I just don't like the "in my earhole" headphones.
call it personal preference.
I prefer big heavy cans that have to be bolted to my head, and reinforced with a tripod, but those don't help for workout.. :)

Probably.. I mean, I'm just not audiophile enough to need something like the hd 650's or grado rs1's... My level of quality required is just not that high. If it was, I wouldn't use MP3's, is my reasoning, because I think that the mpeg compressions loses a LOT more audio quality than going from rs'1s to hd497s

For me.. 256K mp3 + hd497 is "better than I could have imagined"

I'm sure if I heard the grado's on an actual lossless audio, I'd change my tune [pardon the pun] but, I can't justify to myself $500+ headphones, or even $100+ headphones.. I had a hard time convincing myself to get the hd497s instead of the hd202's
 
The koss ksc-35/75/55 sound better than $30 phones should. I think you'd be happy with any of them.
Interesting thing about them is that, when well amped, they improve to almost Grado sr-60 quality. They get a depth and punch that's much more than you'd expect from a "low end" phone. I couldn't believe how much life they gained.

Well, I'll let you know what I think of them when I get them.. Like I said, I figured i'd try them, and if they DO suck, i'll get the px100s

As promised, I said i'd give my feedback on them..


Well, for what I paid for them, I really think they aren't bad at all.. the highs are a LOT crisper than I'm used to, so much in fact, that I'm trying desperately to figure out how to lower the treble on my portable player .. Amy Lee sounds way more "siren"ish than I hear her on my hd497s'


Are they replacements for my 497s? Hells no.

Are they better than sticking somethign in my ear? Hells yes..

Can I hear cars around me? Yep.. Birds too, and my footfalls [with sound muted, that is].. just enough leak-in so that I don't feel shut out from the world without hearing "everything"

Exactly what I needed, I think.

The KSC/55's? Well, they're the only true behind-the-head 'phone that's worth considering, particularly at its modest price point. The Sony MDR-G74SL's are okay, but cost twice as much as the KSC/55's.
 
why not the Koss Sportapros?

I tried the clip-on phones once, and didnt like them, they just would not sit right. I had the Sony ones if that matters any.

The sportapro's and the ksc-55's seem to use the same phone itself.. (same ranges, etc.. ) but the ksc55's are half the price as the sporta pro's

I don't consider the SportaPros to be true behind-the-head 'phones at all. They're more of a conventional, over-the-head 'phone whose headband can be converted to a behind-the-head style. And the 'phones are not very secure on the head in the behind-the-head mode.
